Bayer 04 have further strengthened the first team squad with the signing of the Chile international Junior Fernandes.Leverkusen agreed a five-year-deal to 30 June 2017 with the 24-year-old from Chilean champions Universidad de Chile, who secured the league title in the second leg of the Final on penalties against O‘Higgins de Rancagua. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose details of the transfer.
Junior Fernandes has made four full international appearances for Chile and he will wear the number seven shirt for the Werkself. Fernandes is versatile and he particularly impressed the scouts with his dynamism and power. Fernandes was third-highest scorer in the Copa Libertadores with six goals behind the Brazilian Neymar (8). He netted eight goals in the first half of the current Chilean league campaign.
Holzhauser: “Our key target in attack”
“Junior Fernandes was our key target to fill the vacant position in attack left with the departure of Eren Derdiyok. We’re happy to have succeeded in bringing in this outstandingly talented player and we’re also convinced this transfer has increased our competetive edge on the European stage,” declared Bayer 04 managing director Wolfgang Holzhauser.
Voller: "Technically strong, tough and quick”
Sporting director Rudi Voller gained first hand experience of Fernandes’ qualities in South America before investing intensive efforts to wrest the star from the Chilean giants ‘La U’. “Junior Fernandes has everything a modern striker needs. He’s technically strong, tough, quick and composed in front of goal. We’re convinced he’ll make his mark in the Bundesliga,” said Voller.
