Ashley Cole sustained the injury in a tackle with Landon Donovan
Colesustained the injury after 57 minutes of Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at thehands of Everton on Wednesday night when he was involved in a challengewith Landon Donovan - who represents United States, England's first opponents in South Africa.
Chelseahave now been dealt a substantial setback in their challenge on threefronts with the news that Cole will miss three months of the season, making it doubtful whether he will return in time for the final weekendof the Premier League season on May 8 and 9.
"Ashley Colesuffered a fracture to his left ankle in last night's game againstEverton and is expected to be out of action for approximately threemonths," read a club statement.
Chelsea will likely turn to Russia international Yuri Zhirkov to fill the gap left by Cole's absence but the news leaves England manager Fabio Capello with a real dilemma.
It remains unclear whether Wayne Bridge,a former understudy of Cole at Chelsea, will be available forinternational selection following allegations that his former partnerhad an affair with John Terry - a scandal that resulted in Terry losing the England captaincy.
Joleon Lescott has played at left back for England in the past while Blackburn's Stephen Warnock and Everton's Leighton Baines are also possible replacements should Cole not make the trip to South Africa.
Afterwinning his first cap for England under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2001,Cole has gone one to represent his country 77 times and carve out areputation as one of the world's finest defenders. He was first choiceat both the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals as well as Euro 2004. |
