Sir Alex Ferguson wants Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola to succeed him at Manchester United despite his relatively young age, according to El Mundo Deportivo.
The Scot has refused to set another retirement date since his abortive attempt in 2001-02 and spoke this week of the need for a vastly experienced boss to succeed him.
Although this would seem to rule out the 39-year-old Spaniard, his Champions League and Primera Division winning success with Barca is reported to have impressed the Old Trafford hierarchy.
With Guardiola's relationship strained with new president Sandro Rosell, and contract set to run out in 2011, discreet enquiries are rumoured to have been made about his future plans.
His calm relations with the media and flowing style of football are believed to have tipped the balance in his favour ahead of Real Madrid firebrand Jose Mourinho when Ferguson finally steps aside.
