Newcastle United confirmed on Wednesday morning that they had completed the permanent signing of midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa from Olympique Marseille.
He's put pen to paper on a four and a half year deal and becomes manager Alan Pardew's first acquisition. Neither the buying or selling club have confirmed the price, but a figure of around ￡5m was previously mentioned.
The 23 year-old (he's 24 in March) was born in the Parisian suburb of Clamart and came to prominence at France's Clairefontaine youth academy.
Joining Olympique Lyonnais in 2002, Hatem debuted for France at U16 level in 2003 (opting for the country of his birth rather than his parents' native Tunisia). A first pro deal followed in 2004, with a senior debut that August.
Remaining there until 2008, Ben Arfa exited for Marseille that summer after a claimed training ground scuffle with Sebastien Squillaci.
Following a further fallout with the Stade Velodrome hierarchy, he moved to SJP on loan in late August 2010. Debuting as a second half substitute at home to Blackpool the following month, he got off the mark in spectacular style with the winning goal at Everton a week later.
In just his fourth outing for the club though, Ben Arfa was stretchered off after just seven minutes of the game at Manchester City - a victim of a tackle from Nigel De Jong that broke the Frenchman's left leg in two places.
The player's agent commented just before Christmas that Hatem was making good progress in his recovery and could be back playing by the first week in February.
Hatem's first full international cap came against the Faroe Islands in October 2007, when he netted the first of two goals to date. The second strike - and his most recent and eighth cap - came against Norway in August 2010.
