The 20-year-old had helped his side take the lead by converting a penalty, but paid the price for showboating when his manager took him off.
With 30 minutes of the game gone, Balotelli tried to score with an ambitious backheel despite being through on goal.
Mancini said: "I didn’t speak to him. But I think that we need to be always professional, always serious, and for me in that case Mario wasn’t professional. And for this I changed him.
"In football we should be serious, always. And if you have a chance to score, you should score. Only this, for me, it’s finished now. And I hope for him it is an important lesson."
The ex-Lazio boss also wants the youngster to keep a check on his emotions.
"Sometimes he needs to control his emotions, yes," Mancini admitted to Goal.com following the match, which City won on penalties after drawing 1-1. "Mario is good player, but he's young and needs to improve as a player and as a man sometimes."
Mancini insists there will not be any further disciplinary action following Sunday's events, and said: "No, no. To take him off the pitch after 30 minutes is [enough] punishment for him." |
