A warning note amid Everton euphoria
Blues warned they must build on fourth place triumph

After the giddy delight which greeted confirmation of Everton's
fourth-place finish came words of warning. "Throughout this
club's history there have been pivotal moments which have
allowed us to go forward," said the chief executive Keith Wyness.
"This is one, though it is nothing more than an opportunity. It is
not a solution to everything, but a platform to build on."
It is a foundation upon which few could have dreamed Everton
would stand last summer. The feelgood factor is back on the pitch
at Goodison Park after a season of resurgence and, courtesy of
the team's startling progress to the brink of the Champions League,
similar progress could yet be made in the boardroom. Emerge from
a two-leg qualifying tie, for which they will almost certainly be
seeded, in August and Everton will benefit from a basic £8m for
reaching the group stage.
The dividends could double over the campaign. For a club which
has grown used to buckling under the weight of debt, such an
influx of funds is critical, explaining Wyness's caution. Since the
heady days of the 80s petered out to under-achievement, Everton
have sought a passage back to the elite. Now, with a thin squad
moulded into a tireless team by the manager of the moment, the
Merseysiders have stumbled back into the big time.
David Moyes was back at his desk at Bellefield yesterday, his
thoughts already turned to tomorrow's trip to Arsenal. On the
season's opening day the the champions ventured north to trounce
his ramshackle side, the 4-1 defeat apparently confirming this
would be a season of toil for Everton. Now support is welling
behind Moyes, having hoisted his team from 17th last term to
fourth this, to be named manager of the season.
"I have always thought that David is destined to be one of the best
managers in the country and Europe," said the Everton chairman
Bill Kenwright. "Jose Mourinho has won the Premiership and done
it in style, but I wouldn't swap David for anyone. I cannot envisage
Everton without David Moyes. He is a force of positivity and that is
a sign of greatness. What David and the players have done is given
Everton supporters their pride back. The next thing is silverware
and, believe me, we have the manager who will win trophies for
this club again."
Moyes will not be satisfied with fourth place. He has already
earmarked potential summer signings, from Tottenham's Simon
Davies and Robbie Keane to Chelsea's Scott Parker. He will have
around £30m to spend, with his recruits' wages included in that
sum, and still hopes to persuade the majority of the seven members
of the current squad to agree new deals.
"I would hope we are an attractive proposition for players and that
people would relish a move to Everton," said Moyes. "But the game
in this country is better for having a strong Everton. We are not
going to be challenging the Chelseas, Arsenals and Manchester
Uniteds overnight - it takes many years of Champions League
football and winning trophies for that to happen - but I came here
as a young, hungry manager from the lower leagues looking to
earn my stripes. I still have to do that and I'll only do that by
helping Everton into a position like this for several years. This
hopefully can just be the start."
Wyness, for one, will hope as much. Everton's fans have waited
since the shareholders' extraordinary general meeting in September
for confirmation that the Fortress Sports Fund had invested up to
£30m in the club. That wait goes on, with the injection of revenues
from European competition welcome.
"Just by reaching the qualifying round we have not reached the level
of the financial elite," added Wyness. "But this gives us the chance
to build momentum in every aspect of the business."
