2011 Tōhoku earthquake is one of the most powerful earthquakes in the history, causing 15,870 deaths, 6,114 injured, 2,814 people missing, a tsunami up to 40.5 m, nuclear reaction, fire and landslides.
The earthquake was happened on 11 March 2011 at 14:46 (Japan time), with a depth of 32 km. It’s epicenter approximately 72 km east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku, Japan. First, it was confirmed as a grade 7.9 ritcher scale earthquake, but then it was upgraded to to 8.9 in hours, and 9.0 in days. It means, it released approximately 600 million times the energy of the Little Boy bomb. After that, there were 1236 aftershocks which the most powerful ones had reached grade 7.3 of the ritcher scale.
Environmental aspect
After this earthquake, tsunami was happened. The area affected was not only Japan, but also America, Chile etc. In Japan, the tsunami mainly cause floods, making most of the east-nothern area submerge, including one third of Kensennuma(氣仙沼市). It also made the fuel spills and making many towns in fire. Almost all of the Kensennuma was burnt at that time. But the most dangerous disaster that made was failure of the cooling system at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, meaning radiation spilt. When people absorb too much radiation, one may have cancer.
Economic aspect
Houses, railways, factories were destroyed after the earthquake and tsunami. Also, the food produced in east-northern Japan was affected by radiation, so no one would buy it. It was also a big cost to rebuild the cities. Moreover, nowadays, Japan have not much money, it was hard for the government to give money for rebuilding.
Social aspect
Houses were destroyed after the earthquake and tsunami, many people had no place to live then. Also, as road were destroyed, food was hard to go into the citizens’ hand. |
