As Liverpool prepare to welcome The Blades, Ian Soutar from the Sheffield Telegraph provides the view from the Lane.
Are you confident ahead of this game?
Blades fans are never confident. Even last season when we were 10 points clear in the Championship at one point, few felt convinced we would go up. This season there are certain fixtures that we have absolutely no anticipation of getting anything from and this is one of them. Secretly you dream of the impossible, but to come away with a point would be a great achievement.
I know it's been a few years, but how do you normally view a trip to Anfield?
With trepidation, although the last time we came to Anfield in the League Cup semi-final in 2003 we held a goal advantage from the first leg, so were at least hopeful; but really it just felt great to be there. The last time we were here in the Premiership was, of course, the season we went down - 1993/4 - and came to Anfield at Easter looking certainties for relegation. Even though it wasn't one of Liverpool's great seasons it was a shock to win 2-1, especially after going a goal down. That set the Blades on a run that raised optimism of escaping the drop and then - typically - everything went wrong on the final day.
What's your form like?
In 2007 Sheffield United have won two and drawn one at home and lost three away in the Premiership - and that's been the pattern for the season. Away form has been pretty wretched, we've only scored seven goals, and will be relying on home results to keep us up. That said, the team have learned how to play in the Premiership a lot better than in the opening weeks.
Who should we be worried about?
Can't think of an individual who will be causing any concern, though we're encouraged at the way cut-price signing Jonathan Stead has formed a striking partnership with Rob Hulse. Back in 2002, midfielder Michael Tonge was said to be interesting Liverpool and scored a couple of goals against them at Bramall Lane, so maybe he will turn it on again. But it's more about the team as a whole, I guess, and whether we can be another 'small' team annoyingly closing you down.
Who will United be worried about?
Inevitably you fear the opposition's strike force and that's true here whoever it turns out to be. We remember Peter Crouch being a nuisance from his QPR days and similarly know Craig Bellamy of old at Norwich. But top of the list has to be Steven Gerrard.
What are your weaknesses?
The problem is a lack of true class which can do the unexpected when sheer pressure is not enough. We seem to need three or four chances to get one goal while top teams grab theirs, punishing a single slip-up. |
