Steven Gerrard celebrates after opening the scoring for England
Steven Gerrard spared England and coach Steve McClaren's blushes with a crucial double strike to break Andorra's resistance in the Euro 2008 qualifier.

England were jeered off after a shameful first 45 minutes in Barcelona.

But Gerrard broke the deadlock with a low 20-yard drive after 53 minutes, then slid home a neat finish with 15 minutes left in an ill-tempered clash.

Debutant David Nugent scored in the last minute after Jermain Defoe saw a shot saved by keeper Koldo Alvarez.

England, as expected, were without Frank Lampard after he was ruled out with a broken wrist sustained in training.

And he may have been grateful for sitting out a shambolic first half that was notable for the persistent abuse aimed in the direction of McClaren and his team by furious England supporters.

Andorra's only threat was a physical one, with Wayne Rooney targeted for rough treatment and Owen Hargreaves cynically elbowed by Justo Ruiz.

Alvarez did well to repel the few moments when England did threaten, saving well from Andrew Johnson and Gerrard.

The busy Johnson also curled an angled drive just over and Stewart Downing was off target twice when he should have done better.

England departed at half-time to a crescendo of jeering, but were able to cheer their fans by finally breaking the deadlock after 53 minutes.

Rooney touched the ball into Gerrard's path and he made no mistake with a low drive from 20 yards.

The Manchester United star then managed to rule himself out of the visit to Estonia in their next qualifier in June when he received a yellow card, along with Oscar Sonejee, as their running battle continued.

Rooney was wisely withdrawn on the hour to avoid further trouble and was replaced by Defoe, while Micah Richards was stretchered off injured - with Kieron Dyer going on.

Gerrard wrapped up the win for England after 75 minutes, racing on to a clever touch by Defoe to slide a precise finish past Alvarez.

And McClaren then gave a debut to Preston's Nugent, the youngster going on for Johnson.

He was narrowly off target after good work by Downing, but claimed England's third as Defoe's shot rolled towards the goal-line.

McClaren in appeal to supporters  

A stern-faced McClaren watches his team defeat Andorra
England coach Steve McClaren pleaded with the team's fans to get behind the players after their win over Andorra.
The match was goalless at half-time and the England team were subjected to constant booing from their fans.

"What I say to the fans is stick with the players, they are giving it their all and they are out there doing it," said McClaren.

"We came here to win a football match and we have won it. In the end it was comfortable," he added of the 3-0 win.

The booing or the McClaren chants are not helping the players

McClaren said that he could understand why the fans were unhappy, with the win over minnows Andorra following Saturday's goalless draw in Israel.


"I can understand the frustration and the disappointment against Israel but we didn't lose and we came here and got three points," said the coach.

"It is still in our hands, there is a long way to go, there is work to do."

England skipper John Terry pleaded with their fans to save their criticism until the full-time whistle.

"The fans had their opinions during the game which isn't nice for the players to hear," said Terry.

"They are entitled to their opinion but for the players' and England's sake it is best kept until after the game.

"The booing or the McClaren chants are not helping the players."

Gerrard scored England's first two goals, with David Nugent on his debut scoring the third.

And McClaren was quick to acknowledge the impact made by Liverpool midfielder Gerrard.

"The first-half was difficult - the conditions, they had 11 men behind the ball and we lacked confidence," added McClaren.

"At half-time we said they have to show guts and character both on and off the field but they coped with it and Steven Gerrard really stepped forward.


"All the players did that. I am proud of the way they've done it."

Gerrard admitted that despite the modest opponents the match had been one of the most difficult he had played for England.

"The first-half was one of the most difficult 45 minutes for England," said Gerrard. "There has been a lot of pressure.

"The fans were on us quite early and we found it difficult to break Andorra down.

"We knew that eventually if we were patient it would come and we could have scored four or five.

"At half-time at 0-0 we had to show a lot of character. The fans have got to be pleased with the second-half performance."

Andorra coach David Rodrigo said that Gerrard and Aaron Lennon were the only threats to his team.

"As time went on, England became frustrated and that helped us as we were finding it easier to defend against them," said Rodrigo.

"We played well and made it difficult for England, but in the end we were very tired.

"I think the difference in the fitness levels between the two teams showed and it came down to Gerrard, who was the best player on the pitch.

"Apart from Gerrard and Lennon, none of the England players really caused us problem."
