McClaren included Beckham for the first time in 10 squads
| England coach Steve McClaren hailed David Beckham as the best right-sided midfielder in the world after England's 1-1 draw with Brazil. Beckham produced the cross from which John Terry headed England in front and McClaren said: "We've worked on that, at the back post, and JT was there. "I brought Beckham back because he was playing well. "When he's playing well, there is no better right-sided player in the world. He showed that tonight." Interview: England manager Steve McClaren
Interview: England captain John Terry
McClaren took heart from England's performance despite an injury-time equaliser from Brazil's Diego, which denied the home team a winning return to Wembley stadium. "We got the performance, against a very, very good team, one of the top teams in the world," said McClaren. "To nearly get the clean sheet, to be 15 seconds away, shows that as a team we defended well. "We saw that attitude, passion, tackles going in and we played good football as well. They came together as a team." McClaren responded to the boos directed at Frank Lampard and tipped the Chelsea midfielder to return to form, despite a succession of non-descript performances for England. "I'm disappointed. I don't like that for any player. But Frank is a tough kid and he has been through criticism before," he said. "People doubted he and Steven Gerrard can play together but they proved against a world-class team that they can do their job and they did it very well." David Beckham said his return to the England set-up had been an enjoyable experience. |
We needed this game - we feel very sharp and very fit
England captain John Terry
| "I think everyone of us enjoyed it. It was such an historic night for all of England and it was great to be out there," he said. "It is always nice to have the support of the fans and I have had that throughout my career. It was amazing out there for me. "Things are in the past now and I am happy to have been part of this historic occasion. "It was good to be back in the England squad and it was nice to be with the team and just be part of the set-up again." England captain John Terry described Beckham's set-piece delivery as in a "different class" after the cross which the Chelsea man converted. "His delivery is superb. It was a great ball from Becks and it was about time I scored again," he said. "We started really well and got a few early tackles in from Stevie [Gerrard] and Alan Smith which set the tone and we went on from there. "We had quite a lot of possession. "e couldn't get through the middle of them and we tried to move it wide. We did that a bit better in the second half." Terry said the result and performance would help England going into the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia on Wednesday. "We needed this game - we feel very sharp and very fit. We'll take this positive result into Wednesday and we have to go there and get the win," he said. Brazil coach Dunga was critical of the uneven surface which he said did not help his team's style. "Despite trailing we were brave enough to react but the pitch did not help," he said. "Players like Robinho and Kaka are very fast but the conditions did not allow them to accelerate."
