YOUNG REDS GO GOAL CRAZY IN DALLAS

Liverpool's reserves have completed their group games in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup with a 9-0 thrashing of Japanese outfit Ryutsu Keizai Kashiwa.  
Craig Lindfield, Ray Putterill and Emiliano Insua all netted twice while Mikel San Jose, Ryan Flynn and Gerardo Bruna were also on target as Gary Ablett's men made it three wins from three in Super Group B to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
  
They will now face a combined Sporting Lisbon and Benfica side in the last four of the competition at the Pizza Hut Stadium at 9pm on Friday evening.
  
"It was almost too easy for us today," said Ablett. "We got ourselves into a 3-0 lead before half time and then they had a man sent off fifteen minutes into the second half.
  
"After that it was a bit of a rout and we managed to score a lot more goals. Even though the scoreline was convincing I think some of our decision making was poor at times because we should have won that game 14 or 15-0.
  
"We had so much time and space on the ball but there were occasions where we didn't do the right things and that was disappointing for me as the manager. At times we lost our discipline and our shape.
  
"We've won the group easily though and at the end of the day you can only beat what is put in front of you. We played well in the first game, poorly in the second and I'd say we did okay tonight.
  
"We'll need to be better in the semi-final though because we'll be up against much tougher opposition."
  
The Reds' only injury concerns ahead of the semi-final are Ryan Crowther and Gary Mackay Steven while Hungarian trio Krisztian Nemeth, Peter Gulacsi and Andras Simon should join up with the squad in Dallas in time to play a part.
  
"It will be good to welcome those three lads into the squad," added Ablett. "Hopefully they'll be able to fly out tomorrow morning and join up with us in time to prepare for Friday's game.
  
"We also had four lads on bookings before tonight's game who would have missed the semi-final had they picked up another yellow card, but thankfully they all kept out of trouble and so we have no suspension issues for Friday night."

Liverpool solve Daniel Agger injury riddle

THE operation to cure Daniel Agger's longstanding foot problem has been declared a success by surgeons.

The Danish international has been out of first team action for Liverpool since breaking a metatarsal last September.

He has attempted a comeback on two separate occasions, but after training and playing for the reserves, Agger told Liverpool's physios that he was still feeling pain in his foot and it was decided that surgery was the only option.

Agger went under the knife on Monday afternoon and surgeons discovered a piece of floating bone which they believe was the source of his ongoing discomfort.

The 23-year-old defender will now return to Melwood to begin his rehabilitation with a view to being fit in time for the start of next season, although a comeback ahead of schedule before the end of this season has not bee ruled out.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is delighted that the problem finally appears to have been solved.

He said: "Daniel was reporting some pain in his foot so it was decided that he would go for an operation.

"He has now had that operation and the surgeons believe they have found out what was causing him the pain.

"Daniel has more confidence now that the operation is over..

"The doctors have told me that in a normal situation his season is finished but that he will be back for next season. If he improves quickly and makes good progress then he could play before the end of this season, but I think we will wait for next year. It will be like having a new signing when he is back.

"I know he is happier now. He has been trying so hard to get back fit again but now he can look forward to next season knowing it will be a different situation for him.

"It has been a big blow to Daniel and to us that he has been out for so long, but hopefully the problem has now been sorted out and he can start working towards being fit for the start of next season.

"Martin Skrtel has come into the side and done very well along with Carra and Sami Hyypia, but it will obviously be good to have Daniel back because he is an important player for us."

Harry Kewell today spoke of his determination to win a new contract at Liverpool at the end of the season.  

Kewell is currently away with the Australian national side preparing for Saturday's friendly with Singapore and the forthcoming World Cup qualifier against China.
  
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez gave his permission for Kewell to travel to the other side of the world at a time when the Reds are embarking on their most challenging period of the season, but he also admitted the 29-year-old will find it 'difficult' to earn a new deal when his present one expires at the end of this season.
  
"I've got a contract until the end of the season and I'm still fighting for another one at Liverpool," he said. "I've got the Aussie spirit of never say die and I'll take that all the way to the end. I won't give up until the final whistle.
  
"The best thing for me is to get some games so I can be fighting fit for Liverpool. There's a chance here to play two games and the manager was very happy for me to come across.
  
"I've just got to play football. I've been through some good times and bad times and I've realised now that I just want to enjoy my football. That's the important thing."
