Aston Villa winger Nolberto Solano will become a Liverpool player before the transfer deadline, writes Matt Dickinson in The Times (Tuesday).

Rafael Benitez has always denied making moves to try and sign the Peruvian but it's no secret he would like to recruit him to add extra width to the team.

Although a very good player, and a signing we'd welcome, we can't but help think that we should be signing players like Solano in their prime and not when clubs like Newcastle and Villa are prepared to let them leave for next to nothing.

Real Madrid striker Michael Owen is on his way to Liverpool in the hope of securing his dream move back to Anfield.

KopTalk understands that Owen's agent Tony Stephens was informed through the night of "encouraging developments" in relation to the player's transfer fee which has prompted him and his client to head for Merseyside in preparation for a medical should Real Madrid strike a deal with Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry later today.

Owen has made it perfectly clear that he will only sign for Newcastle if Liverpool fail to agree a transfer fee with his Spanish employers and his stance hasn't changed despite holding talks with Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd yesterday.

The outcome of the saga all rests on what Liverpool are prepared to pay.

Owen agrees four-year deal with Newcastle

Real Madrid striker Michael Owen has signed a four-year deal with Newcastle United and will undergo a medical later today.

The 25-year-old England striker met with Newcastle representatives at a secret location in Northumberland, having also held talks with Liverpool on Monday.

The £17 million fee beats the previous club record paid to Blackburn Rovers for the signing of Alan Shearer back in the summer of 1996.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd said: 'Bringing Michael to St. James' Park will rank alongside the signing of Alan Shearer as my proudest moment at Newcastle United.

'Newcastle fans love centre-forwards and Michael is a fantastic goalscorer. He's someone we would love to build the team around and we hope he can help us bring success to the club,' Shepherd revealed in a statement.
