Alonso: I want to go back to Liverpool to say goodbye

Xabi AlonsoXabi Alonso says he wants to return to Merseyside to say goodbye to his former team-mates and Rafa Benitez.
The Real Madrid player was paraded at a press conference in Madrid today and spoke of his excitement at his new challenge.
Xabi said: "It's a very happy day for me. It's an important step in my career, joining a great club like Real Madrid following another great club like Liverpool.
"I really wanted to reach this day and am very happy to be part of this club.
"Everything happened very fast and I did not have time to say goodbye. I want to go back to bid farewell to my colleagues and Rafa. As it happened so fast, I had almost no time to say goodbye.
"I repeat over and over again that the relationship with Rafa was professional and respectful between coach and player. The respect and gratitude for the opportunity he gave me will always be there.

Alonso reveals why he left Liverpool

Xabi Alonso revealed he left Liverpool this week to join Real Madrid because he wanted a fresh challenge at a new club.

Liverpool will reportedly receive £30million + add-ons for the 29-year-old playmaker.
“I am very grateful to Liverpool fans, they were very warm during my five years. It will be really difficult to match their appreciation,” he said.
“I really enjoyed those five years. But a few months ago I took that decision as I thought it was the right moment to find a fresh challenge, to look for a new club.
“That’s when Real Madrid came along. Luckily a deal has been done and I’m very happy.
“It is a personal challenge I felt is necessary for my football career.
“I felt it was right so I looked for a change, for a new experience, and when Madrid came in, that’s when I decided to come back to Spain.”
The Reds have agreed a deal with Roma for midfielder Alberto Aquilani, who will take Alonso’s place at Anfield.
Aquilani is set to undego a medical before the end of the week before completing his move. |
