100 PWSTK - NO.90: NEIL MELLOR

At number 90 in our '100 Players Who Shook The Kop' is present day striker Neil Mellor, who burst through the youth ranks and scored two memorable goals during the 2004/05 season.
Four years after our ground-breaking '100 Days That Shook The Kop', we are delighted to invite you to enjoy our new '100 Players Who Shook The Kop' series – the definitive countdown of the 100 players who have made the biggest impact at Liverpool.

Over 110,000 supporters have all nominated their own personal Top 10 players in order of impact made and now the definitive top 100 countdown is underway.

Every player who has made the top 100 – and there are some surprises in there - will be honoured on this website via the e-Season ticket console with a specially produced video clip, including archive footage and exclusive interviews.

Since 1892 hundreds of players have represented this club but everyone has their own particular favourites so don't expect this list to be based solely on talent. The greatness of a player can be measured in many ways – obviously, his ability on the pitch is the most important, but 100 PWSTK is much more than that. It's about the impact the individuals chosen have had on this club, be it for a variety of reasons. Maybe it was because of their unique rapport with the crowd, a specific incident that has never been forgotten or anything else that has left a lasting impression.

Name: Neil Mellor

Years at Liverpool: 2003 to present

Position: Forward

Date-of-birth: 4/11/1982
Birthplace: Sheffield

Signed from: Graduated from the Academy

Games: 21
Goals: 6

Honours won: None

No matter what Neil Mellor goes on to achieve in life, he'll always be remembered by the red half of Merseyside for two dramatic moments that shook the Kop during the never-to-be-forgotten 2004/05 season. A graduate of the club's Academy, Mellor scored goals galore for the youth and reserve team, attracting a cult following of fans and earning a deserved first team call-up from Gerard Houllier in 2002/03. A powerful, old-fashioned style centre forward, he netted his first senior goal in the first leg of the Worthington Cup semi-final away to Sheffield United but was loaned out to West Ham the following season, where injuries halted his progress. It was not until Rafael Benitez took charge at Anfield that Mellor enjoyed a prolonged run in the first team. With the club in the midst of a striking injury crisis, the popular goal-getter was once again summonsed from the ranks of the second string. Although he had his doubters, he fully justified his manager's faith in him by plundering two vital goals in a short space of time – a much-celebrated injury-time winner against reigning Premiership champions Arsenal and the crucial second in the 3-1 Champions League victory over Olympiacos. Unfortunately another nightmare spell of injuries was just around the corner for Mellor and he spent almost a year on the sidelines in 2005 following a double knee injury. Another spell out on loan, this time with Wigan Athletic, was also plagued by injury problems. To some, his inclusion in this list may come as a surprise but few fans will ever forget the aforementioned goals and the role he played in the glorious road to Istanbul.

Claim to fame: His last-minute winner against the then reigning champions Arsenal

Did you know? Neil's dad Ian was also a professional footballer and played for, among others, Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday

Where is he now? Recovering from his latest knee operation

Chris Bascombe on Neil Mellor: "Credit to him. He has never looked out of his depth at the highest level. Always looked as though he would score a goal and did so against some very top teams."

KEWELL WINNING WORLD CUP FITNESS RACE

Harry Kewell is confident he'll be fit for Australia's World Cup opener against Japan on June 12.
The Liverpool number seven limped out of the FA Cup Final with a groin injury and missed his country's 1-0 win over European champions Greece in Melbourne on Thursday.

But after completing his treatment on Merseyside Kewell has now joined up with his international team-mates at their pre-World Cup camp in Holland.

He's unlikely to figure in Australia's remaining two warm-up games but is optimistic about his chances of playing in Germany.

"The injury is not ideal but I am expecting to be back and ready in time for the tournament," says Kewell.

"I'm so disappointed that I couldn't get back to Melbourne for the game against Greece but it was out of my control.

"I now have to focus on what is within my control, and that's working hard."

EURO JOY FOR REDS FRENCH U-21 DUO

Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec are celebrating this morning after helping France qualify for the semi-finals of the UEFA under-21 championships in Portugal.
The young French duo were in action yesterday as France beat Serbia & Montenegro to secure their place in the last four.

Le Tallec, in his first appearance of the tournament, started the game, before being replaced in the 61st minute, while Pongolle came off the bench for the final eight minutes.

Pongolle had started the previous two games, however, and netted in the 3-0 win over Germany.

France could meet Daniel Agger's Denmark in the semi-final. The Danes complete their group fixtures tonight and need to beat Ukraine to stand a chance of progressing.

Despite suffering an eye injury earlier in the tournament Agger, who has figured in all Denmark's games so far, is expected to be fit.

CARRA CAN BE SVEN'S MIDFIELD SAVIOUR

It is because Jamie Carragher is such a modest, likeable professional footballer - and tired of being described as a utility man - that the last time he was asked about the holding midfield role, he left no room for debate.

"I'm not good enough to do that for England," he said. "There are better players than me who can play there."

That was October last year, as England prepared for their last two World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Poland. Nine months later and the holding midfield role is now Carragher's to lose. He starts there against Hungary tonight as the latest solution offered by Sven Goran Eriksson to a World Cup without Wayne Rooney. With the 20-year-old's scan moved forward by a week to 7 June that is a prospect that seems ever more likely.

The England team tonight is the team that Eriksson has said in the past he hopes will face Paraguay on 10 June. By then, Rooney could be out of the squad for good, and in his absence who would begrudge Carragher the chance to claim a place in the starting XI?

The case for a holding player has been growing for some time although it now seems that, in Eriksson's eyes, the man to fulfil that role is not Michael Carrick. If the Tottenham midfielder fluffed his audition against Belarus last Tuesday then you can only pity him that his chance came in such a strange game.

For Carragher, an English footballer to his boots, this is a wonderful opportunity to cap two formidable seasons. At 28, Carragher would be an England regular in any other generation, but just happens to be cursed by his position as the fourth choice behind three centre-backs in John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell. The holding midfield role is not how Carragher would have chosen to break into the England team, but given his chance he is too smart to be fussy about where he plays.

Carragher's early days at Liverpool saw him moved around the defence and occasionally into midfield but since then he has become an accomplished passer of the ball and an astute reader of the game. The defensive midfield role will hold no fears for him, but he will know that he needs to make a good impression tonight.

Good, because Eriksson is becoming more ruthless by the match. Without Rooney the England manager is deploying his side in a different formation every game and he is not waiting around for the stragglers. Relegated to the bench tonight, Carrick and Peter Crouch will know that there is no room for those who fail to impress the manager every game. As the end of his reign approaches, some of Eriksson's old loyalties are disappearing.

The choice of Carragher as the fifth midfielder means that England now line up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, more like Chelsea than ever before. But the decision also has an effect on the rest of the team and goes right to the heart of one of the most fundamental questions about Eriksson's side: the midfield combination of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Gerrard it seems will start as an attacking midfielder in support of Owen, who, in his first full international since Argentina in November, will be glad of the support. The "perfect footballer" was how Owen described Gerrard last week when he was asked about the prospect of playing alongside his former Liverpool team-mate in attack. After trying out alongside Crouch, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe, Owen finally has his way.

The inclusion of a specialist holding midfielder means that there are no longer any excuses for the Lampard-Gerrard axis failing to work. They have both been granted the freedom to attack that they are given by their clubs, especially Gerrard - who has, it seems, the remit tonight of the traditional No 10 to roam behind Owen and excuse himself defensive duties. If the two best midfielders in the country cannot work in harmony against Hungary, then they may never do.

Eriksson has never wanted to tell one of either Lampard or Gerrard to curb their attacking instincts, and now he has managed to avoid the question altogether. If, among all the hand-wringing that has accompanied Rooney's injury, there is one small shard of hope then it is the chance to play Lampard and Gerrard with a holding midfielder who allows them to perform their normal jobs.

Judging by his mood yesterday, Eriksson had been waiting for something to take the focus away from Rooney and the latest development in the striker's recovery. The England manager was tetchy when it came to discussing the 20-year-old - "not fair on the rest of the squad," he said - and the news that the fracture, according to United, "involves the joint", which would take longer to heal, will have done nothing to improve his mood.

It was left to Rio Ferdinand, that running mate of Rooney's on and off the pitch, to lighten the gloom a little further.

"When you look around the squad, obviously it would be great to have Wazza [Rooney] because of what a great player he is," he said. "But when I look around the changing room I can see people who are capable of coming in and playing. If I looked around and I didn't see anyone and I thought, 'Flipping hell, without Wazza we've got no chance' then I would be worried. But I'm not."

For the first time yesterday, Eriksson seemed to be talking about a World Cup without Rooney. He has responded by freeing the two most formidable talents at the heart of his midfield to fill the creative void. When Rooney's metatarsal gave way on 29 April, the challenge to Eriksson was to justify his £5m annual salary by compensating for the loss of his best player.

Since then the England coach has picked two uncapped teenagers in his squad - Theo Walcott and Aaron Lennon - and now dropped Crouch in favour of Carragher in the holding midfield position. As he faces his greatest challenge, Eriksson cannot, at the very least, be accused of playing a conservative hand.

KIRKLAND WEIGHING UP OPTIONS

Chris Kirkland's agent has revealed that the Liverpool goalkeeper is considering offers from a couple of Premiership clubs for next season.
Kirkland spent last season on loan with West Bromwich Albion and has been told by Liverpool that he's free to look for another club in the summer.

Kirkland won't be signing a permanent deal at the Hawthorns following the Baggies' relegation from the Premiership but his agent Colin Gordon insists there are other offers on the table.

"There are a couple of clubs interested in Chris," Gordon said. "They are both Premier League clubs and Chris is weighing up his options.

"He is training now and is flying right now after recovering his fitness.

"Chris is ambitious and wants to be playing in the Premier League as he wants to get back in the England squad.

"I don't think Chris will be joining West Brom as he wants to be playing at the highest level."

EVANS BACKS CARRA TO SHINE FOR ENGLAND

Jamie Carragher was today tipped to make the England defensive midfield role his own - by the man who first employed him in that position nine years ago.
Roy Evans gave Carragher his first start in that position against Aston Villa in 1997 and the youngster celebrated his debut in the best possible fashion by scoring at the Kop end.

Evans is confident Carragher will again rise to the challenge against Hungary tonight and confirm himself an important member of Sven Goran Eriksson's World Cup plans.

"There's no-one deserves the chance more than Carra. Over the years he's developed not only into a great player, but a great leader," said Evans today.

"I think using him in midfield is an excellent idea. He'll be perfect there. It's something many of us have thought would be the answer for some time at international level.

"It's not as though the role is new to him. He played there at Under-21 level, and he's the ideal person to protect the defence, win it and keep it simple.

"England's back four will be a lot more solid with Carra in front of it. It's all very well having a strong back four, but it's been shown over the years you'll always need someone just in front to provide more protection.

"He'll give more freedom to Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to get forward as much as possible. They're both fantastic players, but they need someone in there to give the team balance.

"Whatever position Carra's been told to play, he's always taken to it the right way. People may have had their doubts when he moved to centre-half, but he soon ended that. It was the same when he was a full-back.

"Just having him part of the side will help the spirit and morale of all the rest of the players because he's an inspirational character. That's important too going into the World Cup."

GERRARD HAPPY WITH ENGLAND WIN

Steven Gerrard capped his 26th birthday with the opening goal for England against Hungary last night and then declared he's happy to play anywhere for his country during the World Cup.
In a new look formation, Gerrard was asked to play further forward in support of Michael Owen as coach Sven Goran Eriksson continues to experiment with new ideas in the absence of injury victim Wayne Rooney.

Gerrard netted with a well placed header early in the second half to send England on their way to a 3-1 victory with John Terry and Peter Crouch also getting their names on the scoresheet.

"There was a lot of pressure on me tonight trying to play where Wayne plays. I'm never going to be as good as Wayne Rooney in there but I enjoyed it," he said.

"The formation suits us, Frank is superb breaking from midfield and the manager has told us we can interchange. I thought we created a lot of problems for Hungary.

"The most important thing was we won and won convincingly, we could have been two or three up at half-time but we took our chances in the second half.

"I enjoy playing anywhere, the manager asked me to play just behind Michael, to try to get the ball and make things happen."
