Liverpool's new striker Dirk Kuyt has revealed how Holland coach Marco van Basten suggested he was 'too big' for the Dutch league and needed to move to the Barclays Premiership.
The 26-year-old sealed his move from Feyenoord to Anfield for an undisclosed fee on Friday morning.

Kuyt, who may be on the bench at Sheffield United but is ineligible for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Maccabi Haifa in Kiev, said: “Marco van Basten has told me this is a very good move not only for myself but for the Dutch team.

“He thinks I have become too big for football in Holland and I need a move to a bigger club. And he thinks Liverpool is a good club for me.”

Kuyt agrees with that view, and said: “It is a dream that a club like Liverpool with their history wanted me. The beginning of the week I was just stunned by things, now it is a privilege to play for them.

“I think my game is suited to England, I think I am a typical type of player for the Premier League.

“I know there is a lot of competition up front, but that is only good for the team. Not everybody can play 50-60 games a season.

“I have watched a lot of Liverpool games, I know Bolo (Boudewijn Zenden), Jan Kromkamp, Sami Hyypia and Jerzy Dudek, they can all speak Dutch to me.

“Liverpool is very famous too in Holland, so nobody has to tell me much about the club.

“In Holland I could make and score goals, I can do that here but I won’t say how many. The big thing is that I can be important to the team.”

He added: “Liverpool have been watching me for a long time, but now the moment has come and I am here for sure.

“I will have to wait for my debut, but I am so happy that I can play soon. I will not tell people that I have always been a Liverpool fan since I was two, that would be a lie.

“But I have admired and followed them, this is a special club for anyone to want to join.

“But I did get a special feeling when I knew they were interested. I have always wanted to go to England.

“Newcastle were interested, but the feeling about the place is very important. I have only had the right feeling here.

“Everton were also interested a couple of summers back, but again I did not get the right feeling about them. It was not important for me because I always wanted to play for Liverpool.

“They are a very big club, but a family too. They have history and they gave me a good feeling.”

Kuyt will wear number 18 for Liverpool rather than his shirt number in Holland, seven, a number he knows is very famous at Anfield.

He said: “I know my Dutch number is seven, and that is a famous number at Liverpool for people like Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan.

“I am number 18 at the moment, but one day it would be nice to get my Holland number again.

“I know a lot of the Dutch players in the Premier League, and I can’t wait to beat my friend Arjen Robben when we play Chelsea early in the season.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy is a big idol for me and I have a great respect for him, it is a shame that he has left English football as I arrive.

“He had a great career here, top scorer in the league, a very good player. If I can have a career in England like him I will be very satisfied.”

"It's important we keep the players focused and not start thinking we're better than we are at this moment."

Rafael Benitez today welcomed his sixth summer signing to Anfield and saluted the club's board of directors for backing him in the transfer market.  

Despite an ongoing search for fresh investment into the club, the board have sanctioned the signings of players who Benitez believes will give the Reds a greater chance of success this season.
  
"I'm really happy with our board and scouting department who've worked really hard to make the signings this summer," said Benitez after completing the signing of Dirk Kuyt from Feyenoord.
  
"We know we don't have big money, but the chairman and Rick Parry have worked extremely well to bring the best players we can into the team.
  
"Pako Ayesteran and I were talking about how strong our squad is compared to other teams. We think we have a lot of new players now who can really play.
  
"It's one thing to spend big money on players who don't do a job, but another when you spend it on quality players.
  
"With Pennant, Bellamy, Kuyt, Aurelio, Paletta and Gonzalez, we know we have spent money on those we will use, can play well, and have talent.
  
"In the case of Bellamy and Pennant, people talk about risk, but there is no question mark about their talent or adaptation into the team.
  
"I see two players for us in each position now. For sure we can improve, and we will continue to try to do so, but we have also signed young players who will stay here for many years."
  
He added: "It would have been impossible for us to play against Chelsea without Gerrard, Xabi and Hyypia when we first arrived.
  
"In the first season, there were games we could not manage because we didn't have the players. We had young lads on the bench.
  
"In the second year we changed this, and now it will be different again with more pace and quality.
  
"We have good enough players on the pitch and on the bench and you will see a different style of play because we have a different style of player."

Dirk Kuyt today completed his move from Feyenoord to Liverpool with manager Rafael Benitez insisting: "He'll score a lot of goals for us."  
The Dutch international has officially put pen to paper on his Anfield deal and could be in line to make an instant debut at Sheffield United tomorrow.
  
Benitez has been tracking the 26 year old striker for some time and he admits he's relieved to have finally got his man.
  
He said: "I am really happy. We were looking at Dirk for a long time and I'm pleased we have signed him because he will be a good player for us.
  
"He's a player with good game intelligence. He knows what to do with the ball and without the ball and he's also a very good worker.
  
"His movement is good, his finishing is fantastic and I know he will score a lot of goals for us because we now have more possibilities in the wide areas and also between the lines."
  
Kuyt, who will wear number 18, becomes the sixth new face to arrive at Anfield over the summer and while the manager is more than pleased with his new signings, he is keen to pay tribute to those players who have left the club since the end of last season.
  
He added: "I would like to say thankyou to all of them. We have sold some players and others have left on loan but they have all given a lot of good things to the club over recent years and I'd like to wish them good luck with their new clubs.
  
"It was important for us to strengthen this season and I'm really pleased with the backing we've had from the board.
  
"We've signed players who haven't been really expensive but who are of good quality and who we know will do a good job for us."

利物浦為何願意等一季，仍堅持羅致智利左翼麥克干沙利斯，上周中歐聯外圍賽第3圈首回合對海法馬卡比便可以找到答案。

「紅軍」領隊賓尼迪斯早在2005年夏天，就以約5900萬元(400萬鎊)收購效力阿爾巴塞特的麥克干沙利斯。無奈勞工部以智利國家隊世界排名於70名之外，拒絕簽發工作證，利物浦只好將他借予皇家蘇斯達。到今季，麥克終獲發工作證，並迅即以表現贏得外界讚賞。他亦甚有信心可於英超立足﹕「我的踢法以速度為主，跟英超十分配合。加上我能說英語，沒有語言障礙。」麥克來自足球世家，父親亦是足球員，曾於南非謀生。
