Liverpool get all clear for new ground
Liverpool have been given the green light to go ahead with their 60,000 all-seater stadium.
The Premiership giants can press ahead with their new ground after council leaders approved a 999-year lease for a piece of land in the city's Stanley Park, a mere 300 yards from the club's historic home, Anfield.
"It's all systems go. All we need now is the club to confirm the funding," council leader Warren Bradley is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
"If Liverpool have the funding in place, they can start on the site from January."
The club now have until the end of September to convince the council that they can come up with STG180million. Should the funds be forthcoming, then building can commence in the new year. The first game to be played at the new stadium has already been pencilled in for August 2009.
The new ground will, among other things, incorporate facilities for sport, education and community activities, as well as a fully-restored Stanley Park. |
