Friendly: Juve conquer Madrid!
Friday 31 July, 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fabio Cannavaro and Hasan Salihamidzic wiped out a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty for a fantastic 2-1 Juventus victory over the Galacticos.
The two giants came face to face in Seville for the semi-final of the Peace Cup, but both were missing key summer signings, as Diego and Kaka were out injured. Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema were able to play, though, as well as ex-Real defender Cannavaro. There was a minute's silence before kick-off in honour of Sir Bobby Robson, who sadly lost his long battle with cancer.
It took less than three minutes for Juve to take the lead. Sebastian Giovinco won a free kick outside the box and Alessandro Del Piero curled it on to the head of the unmarked Cannavaro from seven yards. The former Madrid defender scored against his old club, leaving Jerzy Dudek with no chance, as Cristiano Ronaldo kept him onside.
It was so nearly 2-0 on nine minutes, as Del Piero's slide-rule pass found Amauri for an angled drive that shaved a coat of paint off the base of the far post. Guti ran clear on goal with the aid of a lucky ricochet, but Gianluigi Buffon rushed out to prevent a certain goal with his leg.
Raul and Ronaldo fired wide, but once again Juve threatened on 24 minutes with Amauri. The Brazilian pounced on a terrible Pepe backpass to leave Dudek in no man's land, but the rolled finish was kept out by Christoph Metzelder's decisive goalline clearance.
Ronaldo's strike from the edge of the area was charged down by Cannavaro, but before the break Raul won a challenge to run into the box and Giorgio Chiellini mistimed the desperate tackle to bring him down. Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty and lifted it over Buffon to equalise.
Nicola Legrottaglie replaced Cannavaro at the break, but there was another curious substitution, as Swedish referee Johansson had to be replaced by the fourth official due to an injury.
Juve started out with a great move, as Giovinco spun round his marker and chipped a cross for Mauro Camoranesi, the header tipped out from under the bar by Dudek.
From the resulting corner, the Bianconeri doubled their advantage. Once again a Del Piero set play was decisive in finding Hasan Salihamidzic's header at the near post.
Moments later Ronaldo skipped past Salihamidzic and brought a save out of Buffon, then Raul's follow-up thumped the upright from seven yards. Del Piero was stopped clear on goal for a very tight offside decision, but Buffon needed a fine save to palm away a Guti free kick that took the slightest of touches off Metzelder.
Benzema blasted well wide from a good position, but with nine minutes to go Juventus nearly made it 3-1 as Tiago Mendes unleashed a sudden snapshot from the D that cracked against the base of the near post.
Camoranesi dribbled past two defenders and his shot took a deflection that allowed Dudek to scramble on to the ball.
In the final minute Zdenek Grygera was booked for a horrible tackle on Ronaldo's knee, while Pepe risked an equaliser to force extra time, as he found a free header from seven yards, but was facing the wrong way and nodded over.
There was further panic as Buffon fumbled a looping cross with the last kick of the game and somehow managed to get it back under control before Ronaldo could tap into an empty net.
The Final of the Peace Cup is on Sunday evening against Aston Villa, who beat Porto 2-1 in the other semi.
