Arsenal close in on Van der Vaart
Arsenal are lining up a bid for Rafael van der Vaart of Real Madrid
Arsenal are reportedly ready to make a £6 million bid for Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart.
The Dutch international, who has 69 caps for the Netherlands, has moved down the pecking order at Real after the summer signings of Ronaldo, Kaka and Xabi Alonso in the midfield area, and the Spanish giants are also looking to claw back some of the £180 million they spent over the summer.
The sales of Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure generated £38 million for the Gunners, but they've only purchased defender Thomas Vermaelen for £8 million. Now, according to the Daily Mail, they are ready to make an offer for Van der Vaart.
Despite the impressive 6-1 win at Goodison Park on the opening day, many still believe that Arsene Wenger has to spend more money and strengthen his squad if Arsenal have a serious chance of winning the Premier League.
That point is emphasised with the injuries to Samir Nasri and Tomas Rosicky. The club also face a mini injury crisis ahead of their Champions League qualifier against Celtic.
26-year-old Van der Vaart would bolster that midfield, and is a bargain price given the current financial climate of the transfer market.
Last week, Van der Vaart was quoted as saying he would like to move to the Premier League, despite offers from around Europe.
"There are a number of clubs with offers where I can go in Germany, Spain and Italy," he said.
"I really want to come to England. I want to go to the Premier League and I know where I want to play."
