AMDjust launched Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850. The cards have impressed usin many ways with top notch performance and impressive energyefficiency when idle. The Radeon HD 5700 series isn't far off now, andafter it we have the entry level series and not the least Radeon HD5870X2 sporting two Cypress/RV870 GPUs on same PCB. While we expect AMDto introduce a refresh this Spring, we have learned the next generationis slated for launch in Q3 2010.
Just like with the just launched Radeon HD 5800 series, the name hasnot been set at this point and the name right now is Radeon 100, whichis subject to change though as the product materializes. Three ASICsare in the works that we know of. We're awaiting confirmation on thenames, but they sound a bit Greek to us (think gargantuan).
We shared some stuff on the next generation Radeon series yesterday. The launch is slated for Q3 next year, but it largely depends on whogets the contract. TSMC and we might be looking at Q3 2010 launch, perhaps even on 28nm, while GlobalFoundries will need a bit more time,Q4 at best. The next generation is the first whole new architecturesince the introduction of R600, which both R700 and R800 builds upon.Beta drivers have revealed a chip named R9xx, which points to that AMDhas set the ASICs already, leaving tape-outs to occur in six months orso.
First the name Radeon 100 started circulating earlier this week, thenwe hear these Greek code-names we're not sure what to make of (stillpending confirmation), and now we have three Islands in the same streamof information. We're thinking these are the names of the R9xx mobilecounterparts; Cozumel, Ibiza and Kauai (party islands if you ask me).More information should appear soon, keep your eyes open.
