Liverpool boss Rafael Benítez says he won't be selling Peter Crouch or any of his other players in January unless he's offered silly money.
Liverpool face Manchester City at Eastlands on Sunday in what will be the Reds' first game against Sven-Goran Eriksson's new-look Citizens side.
£40m Or Forget It
Ahead of the clash, Anfield boss Rafa Benítez has warned City to pay up or push off amid constant speculation linking them with striker Peter Crouch.
The forward, insists Benítez, will be going nowhere unless an offer of around £40m comes in.
Big Squad Needed
Crouch and team-mate Mohamed Sissoko are reportedly unhappy at their lack of first team action this season, but Benítez remains reluctant to let anyone go half way through the campaign when the Reds have so much work left to do.
“We are not thinking about selling any player because we will play in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League and we want to be close to the top of the table," said the Spaniard.
“You don’t know if you will have more injuries so you must try to keep the players that you have — we are happy with them. If someone comes in and makes an offer of £40m then maybe we need to consider it.
"But the problem is when you sell a player you need to have another one if you want to keep your squad strong. It’s not easy to say we will do this or we will do that. But right now we don’t want to sell anyone.”
Wait For Summer
Indeed, other unhappy strikers from Liverpool's recent past, names such as Djibril Cissé, Fernando Morientes and Craig Bellamy, have all waited until the summer to jump ship. If Crouch and Sissoko really are desperate to move, they may need to do likewise.
“They are professionals and they need to understand they are at a top side fighting for trophies," explained Benítez. "If someone wanted to go they need to understand we need all the players now. Every situation is different but summer would be easier because you have more time.
"Right now we will try to say no. I like to be calm and analyse the big picture. There is no need for me to put myself or my players under pressure if we have made a mistake in a game.” |
