RAFA BENITEZ is on collision course with Liverpool’s American owners over Gareth Barry.
Tom Hicks and George Gillett have not stumped up the promised 18million to land Aston Villa’s England midfielder.
The deal is now in doubt and the Yanks risked a serious rift with the Kop boss by suggesting his top summer target is not worth the money.
Benitez is fuming and severely embarrassed by the latest development.
The Spaniard has been trailing Barry since May.
Hicks and Gillett promised last Saturday they would underwrite the fee while Villa boss Martin O’Neill conceded defeat in his bid to keep the 27-year-old star.
Yet a full week later there has been no progress.
The US duo apparently believe Villa are asking too much for Barry, who would have little sell-on value at the end of a four-year deal.
Only this week Benitez had spelled out his hope there would be no repeat of the wrangles which undermined Liverpool’s last campaign.
He said: It’s important for all teams to be focused solely on things on the pitch, because that way you get the best from each player.
They don’t have distractions and aren’t always reading bad news about their club. The best way for all clubs to do things is not to create too much bad news.
Yet already that hope is in jeopardy — particularly if his pursuit of Barry falls through.
Hicks and Gillett have also pointed to the central midfield options Benitez already has at his disposal in Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Damien Plessis and Lucas.
Whether those concerns are genuine or a smokescreen as they cannot come up with the cash remains to be seen.
But Benitez insists 18m is a price worth paying for the versatile Barry.
Benitez has already spent more than ?0m this summer but if the Barry bid collapsed so late, it would again raise doubts over his future while the Americans remain in charge.
Barry has indicated he wants the saga finalised by the big kick-off next weekend or he will stay at Villa. Sun |
