Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has reportedly handed in a transfer request at Anfield to ensure he gets his move to Real Madrid this summer.



Liverpool have refused to budge from an asking price for Alonso in the region of £30m, which has stalled any potential move to the Bernabeu, but their hand may now be forced as the Spain international has made his intentions clear.
Alonso has been at the centre of a long-running transfer saga as La Liga giants Madrid have made no secret of their desire to secure a deal.

Speculation suggests a fee will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a sum reported to be in the region of £25m.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has said publicly he doesn't want to sell Alonso, especially as Javier Mascherano was said to be interesting Barcelona.

Alonso signed from Real Socieded for £10.5m in 2004 shortly after Benitez arrived at the club, and appeared to on his way out last summer as Liverpool chased Gareth Barry's signature.
Some reports claim it is that saga that prompted Alonso's request to leave Anfield, with Real Madrid his preferred destination.

Finnan had spells in the English top flight with Fulham and Liverpool

                                Portsmouth have signed Republic of Ireland international right-back Steve Finnan on a one-year deal.
Finnan, 33, has joined the Fratton Park club after terminating his contract with Espanyol.
The defender failed to settle in Spain after moving to the La Liga club from Liverpool at the start of last season.
"Itwhetted my appetite to think that we could get a player of Steve'scalibre here," Pompey boss Paul Hart told the club's website.
"He's really looking forward to coming here and we're looking forward to seeing him play."
Finnan started his career at Welling and went on to have spells at Birmingham and Notts County before moving to Fulham.
He helped the Cottagers win promotion into the Premier League and his form saw him earn a switch to Liverpool in July 2003.
Finnanwon the 2005 Champions League and 2006 FA Cup with the Anfield side buthis stint with Espanyol was disrupted by injury and he started onlythree league games for the club.
Pompey sold right-back Glen Johnson to Liverpool this summer and Finnan has been drafted in as his replacement.

Balague: Alonso didn’t hand in request

Sky Sports football pundit Guillem Balague believes Xabi Alonso has not put in a transfer request at Liverpool.

According to reports, Xabi Alonso handed in a transfer request today morning admist speculation from Spain linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

However, Balague claim’s ‘Alonso camp’ is denying handing in any such request.

Balague said: “I can only say that this is a very complicated situation and I am hearing conflicting versions of events: the player’s entourage are denying that Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request; while on the other hand, Liverpool Football Club insists that a transfer request was submitted to the club last night, and it has been suggested that the paperwork was prepared at least a month in advance.

“I am of the opinion that the decision to make this public knowledge represents an attempt to speed up the negotiations while simultaneously making it known that it is the player who wants to leave.

“As has been widely reported, Rafa Benitez had effectively placed a 48 hour deadline on the deal and it is apparent that Liverpool want this matter resolved once and for all, today, so that they can plan for life with, or without, Alonso from tomorrow. However, Real Madrid – or should we say Florentino Perez – may stubbornly refuse to be seen to pressured into reacting to any ultimatum and, furthermore, the Spanish club are encountering difficulties in offloading players to raise funds and free up space in an overloaded squad.

“On the other hand, it is possible that a fee could be agreed today and that Liverpool accept an immediate first instalment with subsequent payments made at a later date covering the total amount.

“The ball has now been placed in Real Madrid’s court and it is impossible to second guess what their next move will be. It is evident that at least one party wants the matter resolved today, but whether or not they get their wish remains to be seen.”
