Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has stated that midfielder Harry Kewell still has a future at the club.

The Australian international has failed to make much of an impression since his £5 million move from Leeds United in the summer of 2003.

A series of injuries of over the last two seasons have hampered the 27-year-old's time on Merseyside, but he made a positive contribution from the substitutes' bench in Liverpool's 3-0 UEFA Champions League win over Anderlecht.

Despite reports that Aston Villa boss David O'Leary may be interested in bringing the winger to the Midlands, Benitez insists Kewell has time to have an impact at Anfield.

"Harry is trying to play as well as possible," Benitez said. "That's his priority.

"Players who have been out injured for a long time need time and support, especially when they are as good as Harry.

"Which team would not want someone who can play as a winger or a second striker and has the quality of Harry Kewell? "In my opinion, he has all the potential and the talent and the quality.

"When you have been injured, you need to play games in a row and when he starts playing well, he will have more confidence.

"We need to see over the next month how he is, but I have confidence in him because he has the sort of quality that we need.

"I believe he still has the desire to succeed here. He's our player. We are supporting him and he must give to us things also."

  Rafael Benitez looked forward to the imminent return of Harry Kewell to the Reds' squad and admitted: "Having him fit again will be like signing a new player."  
Kewell enjoyed a 25 minute run-out for the reserves last week and is expected to play some part in Australia's international friendly with Jamaica this weekend.
  
The Liverpool midfielder hasn't kicked a ball for the Reds' first team since picking up an injury in the Champions League final but he's now well on the road to recovery and could be involved when Blackburn visit Anfield in the Premiership.
  
"We are waiting for Harry because he can be an important player for us," said Benitez. "Having him fit again will improve our squad.
  
"Every day he is feeling a bit better. He's away with Australia this weekend and then we'll have to see if he can be involved against Blackburn. It may be too soon but we'll have to wait and see.
  
"When he's back with us it'll be like signing a new player because he has a lot of quality. He is a different kind of player to what we have. He can beat people, cross balls into the area, shoot and also score goals himself. He has been out a long time so he will be hungry to get back.
  
"He will bring ability, experience and energy to our team and I'm looking forward to having him available again."
