Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez wants to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson and spend 20 years at the same club - winning trophies all the way.

Benitez takes his confident Liverpool to Old Trafford in the Barclays Premiership on Sunday for a match already being billed as a showdown for runners-up spot behind runaway leaders Chelsea.


Liverpool have suffered just one defeat in 18 games, and victory will see them leapfrog United into second place and stand two points ahead of their north-west rivals with two games in hand.

Benitez therefore has much to concentrate his mind in the short term - but he is looking much further ahead too.

'I am a great admirer of Sir Alex,' he said.

'He has done a wonderful job at United for many years. But yes, I would also like to spend 20 years at the same club like he has.

'If I could do that at Liverpool it would mean we will have won many trophies.

'I am also aware of the criticism Sir Alex has been having recently, and I sympathise. People have very short memories.'

Benitez is taking nothing for granted this weekend, even though Liverpool are in such outstanding form.

'In games like this, you never know what will happen,' he said.

'For me this is like games between Barcelona and Real Madrid. It doesn't matter who is doing well - the result can be anything.

'I do not see this as a form team against one not doing so well. That's nonsense. Manchester United are a very good team with excellent players and a great manager.

'It will be very difficult for us there. Old Trafford is a difficult stadium to play in because of the quality and experience of their players. We must do our job well and show them the respect they deserve.

'United have many great players, and we must be very aware of all of them. I would like to see an open, attacking game - but because there is so little difference between the sides now, we must expect both teams to be very careful and the game close.'

Benitez also believes United's defeat away to Manchester City last week could work against his team.

'It will be difficult,' he predicted.

'Because they lost to their greatest rivals last week, they will want even more to do their best against us.'

Benitez also has great personal respect for Ferguson.

'Last year we were both going to Geneva for a coaching seminar and shared the same plane,' he recalled.

'He was kind enough to explain a lot of things about football in England. I would certainly like to be a manager of one club as long as he has been at United.'

Benitez is happy with the progress Liverpool have made this season in cutting the giant lead United had over them last season when the clubs finished 19 points apart.

'I'm happy with the situation this season. It is true last season we finished too far away from them,' he said.

'But now we are progressing. Our team is stronger. We are really close with two games in hand and we will try and finish higher than them.

'It is important to beat the best teams. To beat Manchester United would be fantastic.

'If you win against fantastic players and the best team it is good for you.'

Benitez is quietly confident about the match, as is Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso - who wins no prizes for originality when he singles out United's front pair of Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney as the players to stop.

'One of the keys to beating United is controlling Rooney and Van Nistelrooy, and we are confident we can keep them at bay by marking them well,' he said.

'We have to make them feel uncomfortable so that they can't play their normal game against us. I trust in Liverpool's defensive system to neutralise those two great strikers, as we would any other forwards and as we've been doing all season.'

Liverpool, who lost 10 league games away from home last season, have become notably more secure in the current campaign - and Alonso believes that may tilt the balance in their favour.

He said: 'We lost 2-1 at Old Trafford last year to two set-pieces - but we're better in defence now and have conceded fewer goals this season.

'We are a more solid team this year and we're very difficult to score against.

'It's always difficult to control United in their own stadium - but the objective is to keep it tight, convert our chances and look for a win. To get three points at Old Trafford will be very difficult, but we're going to try.'

賓尼迪斯對球隊當時防守上的錯誤感到失望，而他肯定球隊今次不會犯同樣的錯誤。

「曼聯是一隊強隊，但我們利物浦也已進身列強，我們現在比上場在艾菲路對曼聯時更強。」

「我肯定他們會看見一隊真正的利物浦。上年我們在聯賽舉步為艱因為我們入球能力不足，而後防則有很多不必要的失球。」

「我們後來不斷地自我建立而現在球隊的面貎已完全不同了。我不敢說我們現在比其它球隊強，因為要到季尾才可以下結論。」

「我們比上季進步，而我們現在還是在進步中。」

「我知道兩間球會源遠流長的敵對歷史，我們就算作客都會力求勝出，我們會緊逼對手，找尋機會攻擊。」

「我們有特定的隊形而且沒有失球，球員都信心十足，目標只有一個，就是作客奧脫福勝出，繼續追趕榜首。」

賓尼迪斯還是拒絶討論紅軍奪標的機會，但他還是對明日一戰信心十足。

「我們必需以前四名完成聯賽」他謂：「一年前我們落後曼聯和阿仙奴２４分。前四是我們的目標，過了這個月之後我們就可以知道前四以外我們能否更上一層樓。」

「有時，如果你定的目標太高會使你活得很痛苦，所以有時一步一步來才是最好的。」

「是，這的確是很重要的一場大戰，但我寧願這場比賽和但接著卻連勝六場。」

「為何？因為你絕不能失分給榜首的其它隊伍」

「如果我們打敗曼聯但之後卻三連敗，忘記它吧，根本沒有意義。我寧可對其它球取得連勝。」

「當然，能打敗曼聯是最理想的。但誰知再往後的發展會是怎樣的？」

「人們必需明白我們正在進步中，而還有很多地方我們還需更加改進」

「如果我們作客奧脫福勝出，那是極佳的，但接著我們還是要去思巧下一場比賽。這不是今季最後一場比賽，也不是我們最決定勝的一場賽事。對我來說，最重要的是勝出應該勝出的賽事，而不是一場半場重量級大戰」

「當兩隊有如此地位的球隊對碰，他們對對方都有一份敬意的。有時可能會有人批評你沒有盡上全力去爭勝，但要對像曼聯般的球隊勝出不是一般人想像般容易的。」
