  Rafael Benitez knows just how tough Saturday's FA Cup tie with Manchester United will be but has outlined just how determined his players are to win this game.  
Benitez has yet to savour a victory over United since his arrival at Anfield but the manager knows anything can happen in cup football.
  
"This is a very important game and the players want to beat Manchester United and are very determined to win," reported Benitez.
  
"All games against Manchester United are really tough but in the cup anything can happen. We have started the week well with a good win over Arsenal and hopefully we can beat Manchester United.
  
"People say we haven't beaten them in the FA Cup for 85 years but we want to change the statistics, and after beating Arsenal we have the confidence for winning.
  
"We know the strikers aren't scoring goals at the moment but maybe they can against Manchester United."

Winger Adam Hamill and defender Calum Woods have both been promoted from the Academy to Melwood.

18-year-old Hamill has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo and Joe Cole. He's moved to Melwood full-time and has signed a contract that will run for 2 years from the end of this season.

19-year-old Woods has been at the Academy from the age of 10. He was promoted to Melwood last week. He can play anywhere across the back of the defence but his preferred position is right-back.

Both players can still play for the Under 18's this season.

Let's hope they knuckle down and continue their excellent progress.

With kick-off fast approaching, here are all the important stats and facts ahead of the big Cup clash with Manchester United at Anfield.  
The last time Liverpool won a Fifth Round tie was in 2001 when the Reds defeated Manchester City 4-2 on the way to winning the F.A.Cup and ultimately the 'treble'.
  

The last Liverpool player to score a hat-trick in the competition was Stan Collymore whose three goal haul came against Rochdale in 1996.
  

This game will be Liverpool's 19th Cup game of the season.
  

The last player to score a winning goal for Liverpool against United in the F.A.Cup was Harry Chambers in January 1921.
  

Liverpool have only ever beaten Manchester United once at Anfield in this competition. It came in February 1898 when United were called Newton Heath.
  

The sides last met in the F.A.Cup in 1999 when Liverpool lost 2-1 at Old Trafford. Only seven players in the Reds squad that day are currently at Anfield and one of those, Robbie Fowler, is cup-tied. The other six that all started were Dudek, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Gerrard and Hamann.
  

Since that game, however, the Reds have defeated United in both the League Cup Final and Charity Shield (both in 2003).
  

Sami Hyypia scored his first goal for Liverpool in a league game against United here in September 1999.
  

Only Jamie Carragher and the cup-tied Robbie Fowler are now at the club of all the players who appeared against United in the last F.A.Cup meeting in 1999.
  

In Round Three Liverpool won 5-3 at Luton and in the process scored five away from home in the F.A.Cup for the first time since 1947.
  

Only Manchester United have prevented Liverpool from scoring in the Premiership at Anfield this season.
  

Liverpool are just two goals short of recording 150 under Rafa Benitez in all competitions.
  

The last opposition player to score against the Reds at Anfield in any game was Geremi for Chelsea back in early October. Since then the Reds have conceded just one goal in 12 home games and that was an own goal against Birmingham.
  

This tie is only the second time Liverpool have been drawn at home in the F.A.Cup in the past four seasons.
  

Liverpool are unbeaten in the last 12 games at Anfield in all competitions.
  

United have gone on to reach the Final or won the Final itself on the last five occasions the teams have met.
  

The only time United have beaten Liverpool at Anfield in the F.A.Cup was in 1960 when Bobby Charlton scored twice in a 3-1 win.
  

They have won the F.A.Cup on a record eleven occasions-one more than Arsenal, and along with the Gunners have played in a record 17 Finals.
  

They are attempting to reach the Final for a third successive season.
  

Last year they became the first team to lose the Final on penalties after a goalless draw with Arsenal.
  

So far this season United have overcome Burton Albion after a replay in Round Three and won at Wolves in the Fourth Round. They have yet to concede a goal.
  

United have appeared in six of the last twelve Finals but did not take part in the competition in 1999-2000.
  

Although they have won the trophy eleven times they have never managed to successfully defend it.
  

Of the team that lined up against Liverpool in the last meeting in 1999 only Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs of the starting eleven are still at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Scholes came off the bench.
  

Sir Alex Ferguson has managed a team to F.A.Cup success on a record five occasions.
  

United are unbeaten in their last four visits to Anfield-all in the league.
  

At this stage of last season's competition United won on Merseyside - 2-0 at Everton.
  

Since being eliminated from the Champions League by Benfica in December, United have lost just two of the last 18 games. Both of those were in the North-West - at Manchester City and Blackburn.
  

Louis Saha has scored in each of his last five starts for United.
  

Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, is looking for his first goal of 2006. His last back in December came at Birmingham.
  

Gary Neville celebrates his 31st birthday on the day of the game.
  

United's last three games in all competitions have seen 17 goals scored with United scoring ten of them.

Saturday's FA Cup clash with Manchester United may only be a fifth round tie but for Old Trafford star Wayne Rooney it could well be the final itself.  
Having already suffered elimination from the Champions League this season, Scouse striker Rooney is understandably describing Saturday's game as one of the utmost importance.
  
Asked to rate how vital it is to United's season, he replied: "Beating Liverpool is ten out of ten. No, twelve out of ten!
  
"It's a massive game and hopefully we can beat them and progress to the next round."
  
As a born and bred Evertonian, the Red Devils former Toffeeman would love nothing better than to put one over the Red side of Merseyside this weekend as he tries to cleanse his memory of Liverpool's remarkable Champions League triumph last year.
  
Rooney is one of many United players to have admitted the events in Istanbul on 25 May 2005 were unbearable and speaking earlier this season he said: "I was desperate for Liverpool to lose. I had a huge smile on my face when they were losing 3-0 but then they came back. Being a former Everton player and now a United player, it was horrible. I was very jealous."

Rafa Benitez wants his Liverpool players to stay focused on the job of beating Manchester United today - and not get caught up in the frenzied Anfield atmosphere.  
More than six thousand United fans are making the journey to Merseyside for the Cup tie as both sides do battle for a place in the last eight of the competition.
  
Gary Neville's wild celebrations in front of the Liverpool fans at Old Trafford last month has been an ongoing talking point in the build-up to this clash, but Benitez is mindful of the need to instruct his men to concentrate only on their football.
  
He said: "I have spoken to my players and they know. If we can score goals and not concede goals then it will be easier for us to control the actions of the opposition players.
  
"It is important we are not distracted and stay focused. I am confident we will do that. We have played in a lot of important games and we know how to play in these situations. We have a lot of experience.
  
"Maybe I have to say to the players to be careful but they have a lot of experience and they know that a lot of people are watching the game. They know they have to control the game."

Rafael Benitez has urged his Liverpool stars to come flying out of the traps from the first whistle against Manchester United this afternoon as he goes in search of his first victory over Alex Ferguson's men.  
Benitez hasn't won any of his four games against United so far and he's also aware of the fact that Liverpool haven't beaten their fierce rivals in the FA Cup for 85 years.
  
"I know I have not won against them since coming here and I am being told we haven't beaten them in the FA Cup for 85 years. That has surprised me but it is time to change all those statistics," he said.
  
"I am not frustrated that we haven't beaten them. I am trying to analyse why we did not score in the last game against them or draw the game but you cannot waste time being frustrated.
  
"You need to work for the future. Straight after the game at Old Trafford I was angry, but not now.
  
"It is a massive game today and we know how important it is. All the games against United are very tough, but it is a Cup tie and anything can happen," he said.
  
"I am pleased with our recent progress. People were saying we would not beat these kind of teams, but we have just beaten Arsenal and now we can beat Manchester United.
  
"But we need to do what we did against Arsenal. I always like to start with a high tempo. If you get one or two corners early on then the supporters are with you, get behind you and it makes things easier. It is important to start and finish the game with a high tempo."

【明報專訊】去年的足總盃賽事，利物浦在第3圈便因為後衛查奧爾的「超級烏龍」而被擯走，成為當屆首支出局的勁旅。領隊賓尼迪斯後來更承認，是因為他低估了球迷對足總盃的重視程度，於是派了半隊副選應戰，結果便以悲劇收場。


事實上在西班牙，西班牙盃向來被視為雞肋賽事，沒有勁旅會重視，來自西班牙的賓尼迪斯很自然也以為足總盃的可忽略的。

曼聯為奧運棄足總盃

不過，作為英超最具經驗的領隊，費格遜卻十分明白足總盃的重要。2000年曼聯因要到巴西參加世界冠軍球會盃，放棄衛冕足總盃的機會。據說，曼聯當年遠赴巴西，乃是為了應英格蘭足總所求，因為後者認為那樣做可提高倫敦成功申辦2008奧運主辦權的機會。即使到了今天，費格遜仍為當年被迫放棄足總盃而感到非常遺憾﹗
