WHO DO YOU WANT IN TODAY'S DRAW?

Liverpool will find out their opponents in this season's FA Cup semi finals this afternoon - but who do you want us to be paired with in the draw?
Do you fancy our fifth meeting of the season with Chelsea? Would you prefer us to face West Ham in the final four? Or do you fancy a semi final clash against the winners of the Middlesbrough/Charlton quarter final?

We've set up an online poll for you to cast your vote ahead of this afternoon's draw at FA headquarters.

Here are the numbers for this season's semi final draw:

1 Charlton Athletic or Middlesbrough

2 West Ham United

3 Chelsea

4 Liverpool

The semi-finals will be played on the weekend of 22/23 April on neutral league grounds.

MCAULEY DISAPPOINTED WITH REFEREE

Liverpool Reserve coach Hughie McAuley expressed his disappointment at some of the refereeing decisions in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa which saw three players being sent-off.
Robbie Foy scored for Liverpool who also had Lee Peltier sent-off for retaliating to a bad tackle. Villa were very physical on the night and had two players sent-off as the game ended in a brawl.

"Despite all that went on with the referee losing control of the game I actually thought it was a decent game and we did very well," reasoned McAuley.

"I don't want to say too much about the referee but there were certain things going on in the game that should have been stamped out early on.

"We scored a good goal very well taken by Robbie Foy after a great ball from Danny Guthrie, but unfortunately we lost concentration and let Aston Villa back into it."

REDS AND RAFA COMMITTED TO EACH OTHER

The decision by Rafa Benitez to commit his future to Liverpool FC demonstrates clearly that club and manager are bound together by the same vision.

Our mutual goals haven't changed and because he was prepared to re-commit himself to this club, we are now taking the opportunity to extend his contract which will hopefully quell all the speculation about a possible return to Spain or a move to Italy.

I would like to make it clear that there were no specific conditions attached to his proposed new arrangement. Some newspapers have suggested that a deal to bring new investment into the club has been concluded and that this somehow inspired Rafa to commit to us.

This is not the case although clearly it remains a very high priority. We are still working as hard as ever down this front, as explained at the Annual General Meeting. Rafa understands this and he knows exactly what we are trying to achieve.

Hopefully all of this will lead to further progress in other areas, but there is nothing around the corner.

It's very gratifying to be able to kill off the speculation linking him with clubs like Real Madrid and Inter Milan. If you think back, the same clubs were in the frame when he first came to Anfield.

He chose Liverpool in the summer of 2004 and he has demonstrated his belief in us again. This says everything about his relationship with the club and the board.

Of course, good managers are always in demand. That is a fact of life.

Real and Inter are special clubs, but then we are also special, something Rafa was quick to acknowledge when he spoke about his passion for Liverpool last week.

In offering him a contract extension, we are not responding to pressure from others. This was all about reaffirming our happiness with him and Rafa demonstrating his commitment to us.

Contrary to stories that have surfaced in the last couple of weeks, Rafa has never sought assurances or made demands for specific amounts of money to further improve the squad. Such reports are completely fanciful.

He is happy with the backing he has had to date. Of course, it was right and proper that we jointly assessed our shared vision and our ambitions. Was the plan right? Did we still share those common goals about winning more silverware? I know that he never doubted our commitment on that score.

Quite simply, this is what Liverpool FC exists for. Rafa has a real understanding about what our club stands for. I know that he was particularly moved by the way the fans responded to him after the Benfica game, despite their disappointment at going out of the Champions League.

The trophy meant everything to them, but the supporters also grasped what it meant to Rafa and they expressed their admiration for his achievements to date. I know that his wife and family really appreciate the special links that exist between club, fans and manager.

I was not surprised that we went out after the announcement about his future and beat Fulham 5-1, followed by that excellent win at Newcastle. Could it be that putting all the speculation to bed has in some way permeated through into the performance? Who knows?

We are just delighted to have a manager who knows what he wants and is determined to help this club move forward. From our side, we want to support his aims in every way we can. We share a mutual respect.

Naturally, I was delighted with the way we picked ourselves up after the disappointment of big defeats against Benfica and Arsenal. We have still got a tremendous amount to play for and we are focused on an improvement in our league position in terms of points achieved and distance from the top.

Away days not ideal

We have just played a Sunday game at Newcastle, followed almost immediately by our trip to Birmingham in the FA Cup. This Sunday-Tuesday scenario was anything but ideal.

I know the programme of FA Cup quarter finals took all of the clubs aback this week. When the fixture schedule was discussed at the start of the season, the big thing in the minds of all of us was the congestion that might occur as we tried to give the England players more time to prepare.

We knew there would be FA Cup quarter finals in midweek, but we were not thinking in terms of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as the options. If we had picked up on that, a lot more concern would have been expressed. At the time, we were more focused on the fact that we were being forced to start the season early with those Champions League qualifiers.

The FA Cup quarter finals seemed a long way off at that point. Having two away games within three days is not something you would want, but we have had to get on with it. Fortunately we were able to deal with the Birmingham test in a big way with that tremendous 7-0 away win. It served to highlight the quality of Rafa's squad right now.

PROMISING REDS TRIO ATTRACT ENGLAND INTEREST

Three of Liverpool's most promising youngsters have been denied the opportunity of a first international cap due to the club's involvement in the forthcoming two-legged FA Youth Cup Final against Manchester City.
The impressive progress of Paul Anderson, Jack Hobbs (pictured) and Adam Hammill has not gone unnoticed at the Football Association headquarters in Soho Square and Liverpoolfc.tv can reveal that all three were pencilled for an England under-18 call-up over the Easter holiday.

But coach Brian Eastwick had to revise his plans for the friendly international against Slovenia at Bournemouth's Dean Court when Liverpool qualified for the final of the FA Youth Cup.

No dates have yet been set for the two games against City but early indications are that they'll take place either side of Easter, ruling the Reds trio out of England contention.

The disappointment of missing out on an appearance for their country, however, will no doubt be softened by the prospect of helping Liverpool to a possible first FA Youth Cup triumph since 1996.

Anderson, Hobbs and Hammill have been instrumental in the young Reds reaching this stage of the coveted competition and all three are firmly focussed on emulating the likes of Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen.

The fact they are being considered by England is further proof of the fine form they have shown this season and a glowing testament to the good work being done by the coaches at Melwood and the Academy.

Anderson and Hobbs were signed from Hull and Lincoln, respectively, during the summer as part of the club's new youth recruitment policy, fronted by chief scouts Paco Herrera and Frank McParland, while Hammill is a graduate of Steve Heighway's Academy system and has been with the Reds since the age of seven.

REDS KEEPER SUFFERS INJURY BLOW

Liverpool's out-on-loan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has had his season prematurely curtailed after breaking a finger in training.
Kirkland is currently on a year long loan with West Bromwich Albion but after sustaining this latest injury it looks as though he's played his last game for the Baggies.

It's also ended any faint hopes the 24-year old keeper may have harboured about forcing his way back into the England squad ahead of the World Cup in Germany.

RAFA: THIS WILL BE A MUCH TOUGHER DERBY

Rafael Benitez is warning his players to expect a sterner derby test this weekend than the one they encountered at Goodison earlier in the season.
Liverpool coasted to a 3-1 victory in the fixture between the two teams back in December as a then struggling Everton team failed to cause the Reds any serious problems.

David Moyes' men have improved dramatically since the turn of the year and go into the final set of games still aiming for a place in next year's UEFA Cup.

The Reds are full of confidence after netting 15 goals in their last three games, but Benitez is preparing his players for a tougher challenge against the Blues.

"On Tuesday we played a team which has a lot of problems. Against Newcastle and Fulham we played well and scored goals, but we know it's not going to be the same all the time," said Benitez.

"This will be a harder game because a derby is always more difficult to win for both teams, no matter where it's played.

"We've been involved in three derbies since I arrived and each game has been different. We made some mistakes in the first derby, particularly with the goal we conceded, but we never had control of that game.

"The second match at Anfield last season was much better for us. We started really well with a high tempo, which I feel is necessary in these games, and managed to keep the victory even though we had some problems towards the end of the game. The team that starts best in these matches has a big advantage.

"Last season at Anfield we were superior to them and deserved to win. Earlier this season when we met, they had a lot of problems and were a different side to now. Again, we made a good start and took control of the game quickly and deserved our victory.

"We know we must approach this match with the same attitude and intensity. You need to play this game with your heart as much as your brain.

"I think it should be a good derby with some good football. We are playing a team which, like us, is in form, is scoring goals and has a lot of confidence.

"It was difficult for them at the start because when a team finishes a season with a very good result and position, the next year is always more difficult. Everyone expects lots more good things, but it's never easy.

"If you lose some games, confidence goes, so they have done a good job to recover their position so well."

Benitez knows the importance of another victory as the Reds chase second place in the league table - but he's also mindful of the chase for Champions League places going on below them.

"There are still at least three other clubs outside the top four who have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Arsenal, Bolton and Blackburn are all in the race," he said.

"Bolton have three games in hand and there are still a lot of fixtures left.

"Our idea is to keep pushing to finish second. That's the best approach, because the closer we are to second place at the end, the further away we'll be from places out-side the top four.

"It could be very dangerous for a team which finishes fourth if Arsenal are fifth and win the Champions League. That won't be easy for them, but it's possible."

VOTE FOR STEVEN GERRARD

Steven Gerrard is one of four players shortlisted for the FA Cup Player of the Round Award and you can help the Liverpool skipper win by voting for him today on the official FA website.
The poll is currently being led by West Ham's Dean Ashton after his double over Manchester City helped the Hammers into the semi-finals. Ashton has a narrow lead over Gerrard at the moment but there's plenty of time for Stevie to win the race after he inspired the Reds to a 7-0 victory over Birmingham on Tuesday night.

Fans are now being urged to vote for their player of the round before the closing date of 31 March.

The player with the most votes will be crowned FA Cup 'Player of the Round' and will win £1,000 worth of UMBRO football kit for a local school, club or organisation. He will also receive an engraved silver salver.

The winner will also join The Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing him VIP attendance at the 125th FA Cup Final on 13 May 2006. Two Premiership players, Liverpool's Jamie Carragher and Bolton's Ricardo Gardner, are already in this season's Team.

Liverpool Reserves drew 1-1 with Aston in a fiery encounter at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground that saw three players sent-off and you can now watch extended highlights now online.
Scotland under-21 international Robbie Foy scored Liverpool's goal but it was a night that will be remembered mostly for some robust challenges from a fired up Villa team.

The referee disappointed the Liverpool coaching staff with a series of strange decisions and the match ended with a near 22 man brawl.

Liverpool played well on the night and had the best chances to win the game but Villa escaped with a draw.

RAFA RELISHING CHELSEA CUP SEMI

Rafael Benitez today reacted to the FA Cup semi-final draw which has paired Liverpool with Chelsea and admitted: "It will be a difficult game for both teams."
The semi-final clash will be the fifth time the two teams have met this season, with Chelsea having had the upper hand in both league games and the two Champions League matches having ended in draws.

The winners will face West Ham, Charlton or Middlesbrough in the final in May and Benitez knows his side will have to be at their best to reach the Millennium Stadium.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.tv, Benitez said: "It will be a difficult game for both teams. We know each other so well and when you play a Cup tie you know it will always be a difficult tie. We shall see what happens.

"They are a very good side but so are we. We have a lot of confidence and we know it's a game we can win.

"If you want to win trophies you know you must beat the best teams."

The match will be played over the weekend of April 22/23 at a neutral venue to be determined by the FA.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has claimed Tottenham are "desperate" to sell England striker Jermain Defoe.

The Spaniard was responding to the latest speculation linking Reds striker Djibril Cisse with a move to White Hart Lane, which was fuelled by the French forward's agent Ranko Stojic.

To be fair to Spurs, they have flatly denied any interest in signing Cisse at the end of the season, although coach Martin Jol did concede that the ex-Auxerre ace's name may have cropped up in January when they were looking to bring in a striker.

"I have a clear idea," he told Sky Sports News. "They are desperate for selling Defoe and are trying to sell Defoe.

"They always use Cisse in the middle, I don't know why. But It's not our problem.

"We are thinking about our players. I don't need to talk with him [Cisse]. He is our player, he is working hard, they always talk about him when they talk about Defoe.

"Maybe, I say before, they are desperate to sell Defoe and want to do something.

"At this moment, I am happy with my strikers."

Defoe has been linked with a move to Anfield in some quarters but Spurs will be unhappy with the suggestion that they are looking to off-load the former West Ham attacker, who is desperate to be involved in this summer's World Cup finals with England.
