APOLLO 440 DELIGHTED TO TEAM UP WITH REDS
Apollo 440 star and lifelong LFC fan Howard Gray has spoken with pride about his role in Liverpool's official FA Cup final single 'Ring of Fire' and revealed that he's hoping it can do even better than his last effort with the Reds 10 years ago.
In 1996, as Liverpool prepared to face Manchester United at Wembley in the FA Cup final, Howard and brother Trevor (also from Apollo 440) put together the club's single 'Pass and Move (It's The Liverpool Groove)' as the Boot Room Boyz featuring the players.
"'Pass and Move' was never going to win any awards but it charted higher than Manchester United's effort when they were both released at the same time," recalls Howard of the tune that featured the rapping skills of John Barnes. "It's always nice to get one over on United and to reach No.5 in the charts wasn't a bad effort at all. It was hilarious recording that track with the players. I distinctly remember Robbie Fowler being the ringleader of ethe players then. He was young and brash at the time – not the mature Robbie that we've seen back at the club under Rafa this season – and my funniest memory of the day revolved around Robbie. Despite the fact that he can't sing and certainly can't play the piano, he sat down in front of the piano and led the whole squad through a rousing rendition of a load of Oasis songs. You had to hear it to believe it!"
Formed in Liverpool in 1990, Apollo 440 have seen 11 of their singles chart (with three making the Top 10) and remixed everyone from U2 to Puff Daddy, but speaking to the group you get the feeling that they gets an extra kick out of working with the club they've supported all their lives. Having worked as an engineer on the 'Anfield Rap' in 1988 and put together 'Pass and Move' in 1996, Howard can't wait to see the new version of 'Ring of Fire' storm the charts.
"'Ring of Fire' is a song I've heard the fans singing for years now and it's a great, great record," claims Howard who cites the 1965 FA Cup Final as his earliest memory of supporting Liverpool. "I can remember travelling over to Monaco as a supporter and on the plane, this fella got out of his seat, stood in the aisle and led the whole plane in a rendition of 'Ring of Fire'. It was a class moment. In fact, everywhere I've been with Liverpool over the last few years, you always hear groups of supporters humming the tune or singing the chorus at airports or in bars.
"We started to thinking about recording a new version of the song a little while back. For our Man in Black, it had to be the 'Man the Black Mac', we got some excellent guitar work from Noko and then after the FA Cup semi-final, we put our heads together with Tim Speed, who produced the track, and said, 'Why don't we see if the club want to release the single as their official FA Cup final song?'
"Tim approached the club and all the artists agreed to donate all of their share of income from sales of the download to The Marina Dalglish Appeal. I've heard the players are really into the new version and they've had it on in the dressing room and the team bus so that's obviously a great sign. I know I'm biased but I reckon it's one of the best FA Cup final songs I can remember and hopefully the fans will make it a hit by downloading it from the club site. We've conquered Europe so it would be nice to conquer the charts!" |
