GERRARD OUT OF CROATIA TRIP
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard couldn't hide his disappointment at missing out on England's Euro 2008 qualifier in Croatia on Wednesday through suspension after he was booked during the goalless draw with Macedonia.
It was the Reds midfielder's second yellow card of the qualifiers meaning an automatic one match ban.
"As a player, you want to be involved in all the big games, so I am going home really frustrated, not just with not getting three points but also missing the Croatia game," commented Gerrard.
"I will be cheering the boys on from home. Hopefully, they will turn in a good performance and get the result.
"I was really disappointed with the referee's decision. I told him I got the ball and he agreed with me but said the momentum took me into the player."
The Liverpool number eight is also hoping for a change of fortune in front of goal after he hit the crossbar during the match with Macedonia.
"I need a change of luck," added Gerrard. "I have already hit the woodwork four or five times this season.
"I hit the shot well, but maybe I hit it a little too well. Sometimes, you mis-hit them and they go in."
Meanwhile, England Head Coach Steve McClaren felt Gerrard's booking was very harsh to say the least and commented: "It's obviously a big blow to be without Steven Gerrard against Croatia.
"I thought the booking was very harsh and the reaction of the Macedonia players got him booked. It was an innocuous challenge, no more than a free-kick." |
