LIVERPOOL V FULHAM: THE FINAL WORD
Liverpool returned to winning ways in fine style with a goal feast and a 5-1 demolition of Fulham. Here's the best of the post match reaction.
The Liverpool manager
"We were all waiting for Robbie to score his first goal back at Liverpool and it was a reward for his hard work. It was good for the supporters, the team and Robbie for him to score. It was a fantastic game for the strikers and the team and it was very important for us to see them score. We also had the assists of Djibril Cisse and it is very important for their confidence. It has given me a nice selection problem for the next game but a good one. This was a really important three points for us and my idea is to get another three points at Newcastle in the next game on Sunday."
Rafael Benitez
The Fulham manager
"It looked as if we had been battered after those last few minutes, but I cannot criticise the players after that. I was not happy with the way we played at Everton on Saturday and I told them that. But we played some very good stuff (tonight). It is never easy when you come to Anfield. We have been smashed by Arsenal, beaten at Everton, but did not think we deserved to lose by five after the way
we played."
Chris Coleman
The Liverpool player
"It doesn't matter that it wasn't at the Kop. A goal is a goal no matter which end it goes in. I'm pleased to get off the mark again. It's been a long time and people have pointed out that fact, but I'm on my way again. Another pleasing thing is that the other strikers have scored as well that takes the heat off us a bit. I've waited a long time for this and I'm just really pleased to get off the mark again."
Robbie Fowler
The broadsheet newspaper
Robbie Fowler's first goal since his shock transfer back to Liverpool in January set his team on the way to an emphatic, morale-boosting victory last night when Fulham - without a win this season on their travels - again proved accommodating Premiership visitors. It was a night of unbridled celebration for the Merseysiders. Not only did Fowler become the first of the club's four strikers to score since the turn of the year but his colleagues, Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch, also ended their embarrassing Premiership goal droughts and manager Rafael Benitez reaffirmed his commitment to the Anfield cause.
William Johnson, Daily Telegraph
The local newspaper
Fowler, a constant source of irritation to the visiting defence, curled a speculative effort at Warner before finally breaking his duck on his second coming in the 16th minute. Tenacious play from Kewell won a corner on the left, and after the Australian's delivery was flicked on by Garcia at the near post, Fowler, who had neatly evaded his marker, nodded in at the far post. It was the first league goal scored by a Liverpool striker since Crouch netted against West Bromwich Albion on December 31. Perhaps equally as remarkable was that it came from a set-piece.
Ian Doyle, Daily Post
The tabloid newspaper
IT WASN'T exactly the five of his youth, but Robbie Fowler will be more than happy with the one goal that re-opened his Liverpool account last night. The striker began his Anfield career with a staggering five-goal performance here against Fulham. And while he couldn't quite repeat the miracle of that teenage night, he still did enough to win the game and silence the talk of a mounting crisis surrounding the Liverpool forward line. It is four years and four months since Fowler scored his last goal for the Merseyside club, and it seems almost as long since a Reds striker found the net here. But by scoring a perfect poacher's goal - and following it up by creating another - the centre-forward revived memories of his 18-year-old self and sent Fulham tumbling to yet another defeat away from home in a calamitous season.
David Maddock, Daily Mirror
The Liverpool supporter
It's always great to thrash any team but it was remarkable for many reasons.
1, Fowler's first legitimate goal in his second spell with LFC! Good man Robbie, great performance tonight.
2, Fowler draws level with the great Kenny Dalglish in his scoring record! To even be compared with such a great shows you the pedigree of our Robbie.
3, Fowler, Morientes, Crouch all scoring, Cisse involved in setting up two goals. The end of our striker's goal drought bodes well for the remaining FA Cup and league games. Sure, all our problems have not disappeared, but the confidence will be back now and the goals will flow easier.
4, We have 58 points already in the league with eight games left. We have now matched our total from last year, with another 24 points to play for and we are only two points behind Manchester United. That's a fact, and that's a sure sign of progress over last year.
5, Life as a fan is an up and down ride, but tonight is one of the up nights. Party on LFC fans, the future is bright and the future is red!Doire, LFC.tv Message Boards |
