Liverpool's youngsters will be urged to play their normal game tonight as they lie just 90 minutes away from a place in this season's FA Youth Cup final.  
The Reds' youth team take a 2-1 first leg lead to Southampton's St Mary's Stadium thanks to goals from Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield at Anfield last week.
  
Although a draw will take them safely through to a final showdown against either Manchester City or Newcastle, coach John Owens insists the emphasis must be on going out to win the match tonight.
  
"Looking at the Youth Cup it is a major event in the season and we are delighted to be doing so well. But it is not an end in itself. Okay it will end and someone will win the cup and we would like it to be us. That then will go into history.
  
"But what we want is that these boys use these games and of course the Saturday games to progress and develop into players who can go from the Academy into the reserves and from the reserves into the first team and get a career out of football.
  
"We would love to see some at our club, but we mustn't lose sight of the fact that this is just a cup competition that fits in on the development in their footballing life.
  
"It is important because over 100 teams enter and at the end their will be only one left. We want to be that team of course, but the bigger picture is it is just one small part in the development of these players.
  
"This is the first time our lads have played in a two-legged affair. The first team play in Europe and have that situation. And they look at what you need to do after the first leg tactically.
  
"At youth level, we usually try to take each game separately. This game is different. It is not a one-off game because in the back of your mind you are one goal ahead. They won't have experienced that before. But we have got to make sure we start the game as we would any other game and try and get our game going.
  
"If we can get the players in our team playing our football, we can cause Southampton problems. Of course the game will swing at times their way and we will have to be ready to soak up the pressure. We just need to get the right mix of defending and attacking.
  
"But we are not in a situation where we might think of going to defend a one-goal lead - that would be more suicidal. We will just try and play our normal game and let the result take care of itself. If we play well enough we can win."

Rafael Benitez has insisted the Reds' FA Cup quarter final at Birmingham on Tuesday will have no effect on his starting line-up for this weekend's clash at Newcastle.  
With this season's quarter finals being played in midweek for the first time, those involved in the last eight could be forgiven for resting their key men for league games this weekend.
  
Liverpool will have just 48 hours to recover from their clash at St James' Park before they do battle in the Cup at Birmingham, but Benitez insists he won't be thinking about Tuesday night's game when he names his side to play at Newcastle.
  
"You need to analyse the squad and say if you can manage both games at the same times, you will," explained Benitez.
  
"The priority is always the next game. We will not say we will play best players in one game or keep them for another. We need to keep winning because it's good for confidence."
  
Liverpool will welcome back Xabi Alonso and Sami Hyypia for this weekend's game after both missed the rout of Fulham through suspension and injury respectively.
  
Michael Owen is still sidelined for the Geordies and won't be involved against his former club.

Liverpool's young starlets aim to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup when they take a 2-1 lead to Southampton in the second leg of the semi-final tonight, and you can listen to the match live with full commentary right here on Liverpoolfc.tv.  
The match kicks-off at 7.30pm and Steve Heighway's team head to St Mary's Stadium full of confidence that they can reach the final of the FA Youth Cup for the first time since they won it in 1996.

Liverpool's youngsters are into the final of the FA Youth Cup after goalkeeper David Roberts emulated Jerzy Dudek's Istanbul heroics by saving two penalties, in a heroic 5-4 shoot-out win over Southampton at St Mary's.  
Liverpool were seconds away from reaching the final in normal time but an own goal from Jack Hobbs in the fourth minute of stoppage time earned Southampton an equaliser. It was so unfortunate for Hobbs who had a magnificent match on the night and didn't deserve that moment of misfortune. A cross came in from the right hand side and Hobbs, on the stretch, turned the ball past his own goalkeeper David Roberts to earn the Saints a lifeline. That made the scoreline 3-3 on aggregate and forced extra-time.
  
Then after the aggregate scoreline of 4-4 at the end of extra-time, Liverpool won the penalty shoot-out thanks to the brilliance of Roberts.
  
Paul Barratt, Charlie Barnett, Michael Nardiello, Adam Hammill and Stephen Darby all scored from the spot for Liverpool
  
Liverpool were magnificent on the night and deserved to win the game in a match that had so many twists and turns. Steve Heighway's team will now hope to match the Michael Owen/Jamie Carragher inspired team of 1996 that won the FA Youth Cup.
  
It was one of those games that you couldn't take your eyes off for a minute as there were so many goalmouth scrambles and heroic defending from the likes of Hobbs and Godwin Antwi at the back for Liverpool.
  
The fighting spirit of the Liverpool players was fantastic and the young lads just kept fighting and fighting. They suffered another blow 10 minutes into the first period of extra-time David McGoldrick scored his second goal of the game from close range to put Southampton 3-1 up. However the young Reds responded almost instantly and Robbie Threlfall rose high from a corner to head home to make it 3-2 and the aggregate equaliser at 4-4.
  
Liverpool had played really well in the first half and things had looked rosy when Craig Lindfield gave them a fourth minute lead to make it 3-1 on aggregate. The outstanding Adam Hammill started the move and when Charlie Barnett threaded a superb through ball into Lindfield's path, the striker did the rest with a cool and composed finish.
  
Liverpool had the chances to increase their scoreline but Adam Hammill and Ryan Flynn were both denied by brilliant saves from Saints keeper Zach Jones.
  
Just past the hour mark Southampton equalised when Adam Lallana set up David McGoldrick who tapped in from close range.
  
The Reds then had to withstand incessant Southampton pressure in the second half as the home side threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Liverpool defence.
  
Steve Heighway's young heroes were excellent on the night against Southampton, on a freezing night at St Mary's, and thoroughly deserve the accolades that will come their way after this victory.
  
It took Liverpool's young starlets just three minutes to open the scoring and make it 3-1 on aggregate.
  
It is a wonderful achievement for Liverpool to make the final of the FA Youth Cup and the combination of home grown talent and Rafael Benitez's signings Jack Hobbs, Paul Anderson, Godwin Antwi and Miki Roque has worked a treat.
  
Liverpool Academy Director Steve Heighway made one change to his team from the first leg with Paul Barratt coming in to strengthen the midfield, in place of 16-year-old right winger Ben Parsonage.
  
As a team Liverpool were outstanding on the night and the players worked so hard for each other and were so desperate to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup.
  
Hammill was a constant menace to the Saints defence all night from the left wing and was denied a deserved goal in the second half when he was denied by a fine save from Zach Jones.
  
It was a fantastic game of football and the youngsters have done the club proud.

　　賓尼迪斯對此感到滿意。“作為主教練，能夠受到皇馬這樣的豪門關注，我感到很自豪，但我從來沒有接到過他們的正式邀請。而這裡的人給予了我巨大的支持，我很感激，也有責任回報他們。”

　　賓尼迪斯留下了，紅軍的復興有了基礎。但是上賽季的冠軍杯無疑有不可忽視的運氣因素，利物浦在歐洲的競爭力仍然有限，而且在英超聯賽中，短期內也不大容易從車路士手里搶走冠軍。作為主教練，賓尼迪斯可以不計較金錢，但是作為球隊，必要的資金支持才是登上巔峰的關鍵。《鏡報》表示，其實賓尼迪斯曾經猶豫過是去是留，因為據說皇馬不但開出更高的年薪，還允諾給愛斯賓奴充足的資金購買球員，這一點，利物浦的高層們能做到麼？

記者王康寧報道 根據當地媒體的普遍報道，愛斯賓奴的經紀人奎隆與利物浦CEO佩里在過去幾天里經過協商，已經就本尼蒂斯的續約問題達成一致，眼下只等雙方在新合同上正式簽字。據悉這份新合同為期4年，將於2010年夏天到期(原有合同在2009年到期)，本尼蒂斯的年薪也將略有提升達到250萬英鎊，平均每周5萬(眼下還不到4萬)。

　　對富咸賽前，這一消息還只是“傳聞”，但5比1的大勝顯然讓本尼蒂斯喜不自禁，竟然在賽後主動證實了人們的猜測：“是的，我們在討論這件事，雙方都很滿意現狀，因此(續約)不會有太大問題。當然，除了幾個簽名本之外，我還什麼都沒簽呢。”媒體的分析是，佩里在與奎林的談判中作出了向主教練提供足夠引援資金的保證，這才使得本尼蒂斯下定決心留守安菲爾德。

　　續約消息面世的時機真是再恰當不過。就在周三當天，皇馬新主席馬田已在著手任命前主帥甘馬曹為俱樂部足球總監，助手則是皇馬功勛老臣希亞路，而兩人都與本尼蒂斯保持著不錯的私交。另一方面，西班牙報紙《馬卡》日前完成的一項民意調查結果顯示，34%的皇馬球迷希望球隊在今年夏天由本尼蒂斯接手。

　　或許是對球隊本賽季此前15場聯賽做客無一勝績徹底失望，周三的安菲爾德只迎來了150多個客隊球迷，不過這並不妨礙主場觀眾享受這場難得的進球大餐。紅軍上一次在聯賽主場五破對手球門還要追溯到2002年5月(5比0橫掃葉士域治)，但眼下這場久違的大勝無疑是球隊告別“黑色3月”的最佳途徑。進入3月以來，他們先平查爾頓、再負本菲卡和阿仙奴連續3場不勝，不僅從歐洲賽場狼狽出局，還讓自己的聯賽前景變得微妙起來，以至於主教練本尼蒂斯賽前就球順閉態發出了鄭重警告。

　　施斯在冠軍杯預選賽表現還可以，可他浪費的機會實在太多，加上對俱樂部暗中給他找買家耍態度，很快被賓尼迪斯晾在板凳上。這對他信心是個巨大的打擊，導致他在國家隊最後一場外圍賽對塞浦路斯，錯失了4個黃金機會，之後狀態再無好轉。賓尼迪斯又將目光轉向克勞奇，一再給他機會破蛋，18次上陣，在場上忙活了近24小時之後，“竹竿”終於在主場對威根時為利物浦進球了。自從東京回來後，克勞奇又故態復萌，連交8場白卷。摩連迪斯的回報就更低。冠軍杯對安德萊赫特，和代表國家隊參加世界盃外圍附加賽的兩個進球，本應促使他再接再厲，但在主場擊敗樸茨茅斯一役建功後，4個月他只有兩球進賬。進球最穩定的除了謝拉特，就到祖安法蘭了。

　　《利物浦回聲報》在網上做了一項民意調查：哪兩名前鋒首發最好？答案是：科拿和施斯，得票近6成，次佳組合是科拿和克勞奇的英式配對，得票23%。摩連迪斯和施斯是最“災難”的搭配，略高於3%，克勞奇和摩連迪斯的“雙塔”組合僅比前者強了不到一個百分點，利物浦主場不敵本菲卡，首發的正好是這兩人。迄今，克勞奇還不曾和科拿首發，球迷有些不耐煩：究竟要等到什麼時候才能試試他倆？

　　克勞奇的身高極有威脅，冠軍杯兩戰車路士讓摩連奴抓耳撓腮。不過，他的頭球命中率讓人搖頭。英式打法對頭球要求很高，既要善於判斷落點、又要把握時機，奈何克勞奇力量不足，膽識不夠，要麼在沖頂時姿勢笨拙，要麼躍起後找不到目標，創下39次頭球射門只進1個的賽季紀錄！即使再怕頭球的對手發現他如此不濟，也會恍然大悟。摩連迪斯五十步笑百步，22次空襲沒有一次炸毀目標，到後來竟然連“飛”都不“飛”了。有些前鋒常被評價“獨食不肥”，利物浦的前鋒似乎矯枉過正，過分謙讓了。

記者林良鋒報道 安菲爾德的禱告場上場下都應驗了，3月15日，第35輪提前進行的比賽中，“上帝”科拿為利物浦帶來進球，賓尼迪斯應允續約，鋒線的“飢荒”也暫時告一段落。利物浦5比1重創客場至今未勝的富咸，緩解了3個多月來鋒線告急的壓力，而進球的閘門由科拿開啟，更讓安菲爾德歡喜不盡。

　　科拿第16分鐘門前接應祖安法蘭的頭球擺渡，甩掉布列治，仰身將球頂入。這是科拿的拿手好戲，他的球風不僅體現在射門的准確上，乖巧和多變也同樣令人叫絕。利物浦的第二個進球便是科拿足球智慧的體現，他在禁區邊得球時已在射程之內，但他將球反向交給位置更具威脅的基維爾，後者傳中迫使富咸的熱刺借將邁克爾﹒布朗擺了烏龍。摩連迪斯本應上半時就進球，科拿的直線妙傳將他送上一對一的炮架，可惜信心不足，將球推到對方門將沃納的懷里。5年後，科拿將效力紅軍的進球總數增加到172個，和達格利什並列俱樂部歷史上第5位高產射手。他在第68分鐘被換下，引來安菲爾德老少掌聲一片。

　　給皇馬選帥，絕不像去百貨公司購物，找名牌、找價格貴的下手並不一定正確。皇馬是個大俱樂部，馬田必然要找個大牌教練。但皇馬球迷向來挑剔，光有名氣不管用，球風保守的還死活不要。因此在馬田的五大主帥候選人中，卡比路、摩連奴和賓尼迪斯首先就會因球風問題而受爭議(另兩位候選人為雲格和安察洛堤)。至於博斯克和甘馬曹，馬田想請回他們，但是否讓他們介竟一人擔任教練，他還沒拿定主意。

　　無人可請，無奈之下馬田只好作出了上任後的第一次後退：暫時不提新帥，等賽季結束再說。不過，這次後退卻不一定是個失敗：時間寬裕了，皇馬考慮得也會更加周到。但沒了主帥懸念可炒，媒體的視線必將轉移到球隊本身上來，這將使皇馬最近承受更大的壓力。正如加維臣所說：“本周末對貝蒂斯的比賽引人注目。等著瞧吧，萬一我們再有閃失，污水更會對我們扑面而來。”話是粗了些，但的確是這個理。
