Academy midfielder Charlie Barnett hailed the fighting spirit of the Liverpool youngsters after they fought hard to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup following a dramatic victory over Southampton.  
Central midfielder Barnett was inspirational in the centre of midfield and believed the match to be the best game of his life so far.
  
The Reds won 5-4 on penalties after the match ended 4-4 on aggregate after extra-time.
  
"It was a great night and everyone was buzzing in the dressing room after the match," Barnett told Liverpoolfc.tv.
  
"It was a close game and Southampton are a great side. We couldn't get a kick in the second half but we had a game plan and we stuck to it. It was an incredible game, the best one of my life.
  
"We never gave up and all of us have got a great will to work hard and stick together no matter what we come up against. Steve Heighway has always said that to us and what the first team did in Istanbul was a great inspiration for us.
  
"David Roberts was like Jerzy Dudek in Istanbul in the penalty shoot-out and it was just an incredible night. We can't wait for the final and it's going to be a fantastic occasion for all of us."

Liverpool's young starlets aim to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup when they take a 2-1 lead to Southampton in the second leg of the semi-final tonight, and you can listen to the match live with full commentary right here on Liverpoolfc.tv.  
The match kicks-off at 7.30pm and Steve Heighway's team head to St Mary's Stadium full of confidence that they can reach the final of the FA Youth Cup for the first time since they won it in 1996.
  
Goals from Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield have put Liverpool in the driving seat ahead of the second leg and the goal Southampton scored doesn't count double as there are no away goals rule in the FA Youth Cup.
  
"Fortunately the away goal doesn't count in this competition so we will go to Southampton with confidence," Heighway told Liverpoolfc.tv.
  
"Southampton are a good side and it will be a tough game but we will give it a good go because we've still got our noses ahead."

Liverpool head to Newcastle United on Sunday with Rafael Benitez urging his team to keep up the winning momentum and stay close to Manchester United in the race for second place.  
Benitez always prefers to talk about the next match rather than league positions but he believes a second placed finish would be a good achievement for his team this season.
  
"The most important thing for us is to keep going and try to win every game and keep close to Manchester United," claimed the Liverpool boss.
  
"It would be fantastic if we could finish in second place and we have more confidence now after the 5-1 win against Fulham. If you analyse our season, we have been much better in the Premiership and FA Cup and made a mistake which cost us in the Champions League.
  
"Newcastle are a big club with fantastic supporters and the atmosphere is always good up there. It won't be an easy game but my idea is always to try to win the three points."

Liverpool's youngsters are into the final of the FA Youth Cup after goalkeeper David Roberts emulated Jerzy Dudek's Istanbul heroics by saving two penalties, in a heroic 5-4 shoot-out win over Southampton at St Mary's.  
Liverpool were seconds away from reaching the final in normal time but an own goal from Jack Hobbs in the fourth minute of stoppage time earned Southampton an equaliser. It was so unfortunate for Hobbs who had a magnificent match on the night and didn't deserve that moment of misfortune. A cross came in from the right hand side and Hobbs, on the stretch, turned the ball past his own goalkeeper David Roberts to earn the Saints a lifeline. That made the scoreline 3-3 on aggregate and forced extra-time.
  
Then after the aggregate scoreline of 4-4 at the end of extra-time, Liverpool won the penalty shoot-out thanks to the brilliance of Roberts.
  
Paul Barratt, Charlie Barnett, Michael Nardiello, Adam Hammill and Stephen Darby all scored from the spot for Liverpool
  
Liverpool were magnificent on the night and deserved to win the game in a match that had so many twists and turns. Steve Heighway's team will now hope to match the Michael Owen/Jamie Carragher inspired team of 1996 that won the FA Youth Cup.
  
It was one of those games that you couldn't take your eyes off for a minute as there were so many goalmouth scrambles and heroic defending from the likes of Hobbs and Godwin Antwi at the back for Liverpool.
  
The fighting spirit of the Liverpool players was fantastic and the young lads just kept fighting and fighting. They suffered another blow 10 minutes into the first period of extra-time David McGoldrick scored his second goal of the game from close range to put Southampton 3-1 up. However the young Reds responded almost instantly and Robbie Threlfall rose high from a corner to head home to make it 3-2 and the aggregate equaliser at 4-4.
  
Liverpool had played really well in the first half and things had looked rosy when Craig Lindfield gave them a fourth minute lead to make it 3-1 on aggregate. The outstanding Adam Hammill started the move and when Charlie Barnett threaded a superb through ball into Lindfield's path, the striker did the rest with a cool and composed finish.
  
Liverpool had the chances to increase their scoreline but Adam Hammill and Ryan Flynn were both denied by brilliant saves from Saints keeper Zach Jones.
  
Just past the hour mark Southampton equalised when Adam Lallana set up David McGoldrick who tapped in from close range.
  
The Reds then had to withstand incessant Southampton pressure in the second half as the home side threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Liverpool defence.
  
Steve Heighway's young heroes were excellent on the night against Southampton, on a freezing night at St Mary's, and thoroughly deserve the accolades that will come their way after this victory.
  
It took Liverpool's young starlets just three minutes to open the scoring and make it 3-1 on aggregate.
  
It is a wonderful achievement for Liverpool to make the final of the FA Youth Cup and the combination of home grown talent and Rafael Benitez's signings Jack Hobbs, Paul Anderson, Godwin Antwi and Miki Roque has worked a treat.
  
Liverpool Academy Director Steve Heighway made one change to his team from the first leg with Paul Barratt coming in to strengthen the midfield, in place of 16-year-old right winger Ben Parsonage.
  
As a team Liverpool were outstanding on the night and the players worked so hard for each other and were so desperate to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup.
  
Hammill was a constant menace to the Saints defence all night from the left wing and was denied a deserved goal in the second half when he was denied by a fine save from Zach Jones.
  
It was a fantastic game of football and the youngsters have done the club proud.

Liverpoolfc.tv: Rafa, how frustrating was it not to score the sixth goal to kill off the Fulham match?
  
Rafael Benitez: It was the first time in a long time that we scored five goals and we could get through to the end of the game without problems. Scoring five goals was fantastic.
  
All the talk before the match was about strikers and their lack of goals. How pleasing was it to see three of them score and another grab an assist?
  
I was really happy with them and for them because as a striker you need to score goals. We were talking about scoring goals and I think it was a fantastic night for them.
  
The biggest cheer of the night greeted the first goal. How much did you enjoy Robbie's opener?
  
It was important for all of the strikers and especially for Robbie after he had three goals disallowed in the previous games. This was a really good goal and we were all really happy for him and also for the team.
  
Aside from his goal what pleased you most about Robbie's performance on the night?
  
He has very good movement and he has the game intelligence that you need. He is working hard in the games and he is progressing.
  
After dropping points this season on more than one occasion after conceding late goals how pleasing was it to see Liverpool doing the scoring of the late goals?
  
It was important to see when we scored the third goal I was more calm, and then to score the fourth or the fifth was good news for me and my heart.
  
Three substitutions resulted in two goals and one assist. Managerial genuis or good luck?

As pleasing as it was to see your team hit Fulham for five after the game did you think to yourself why couldn't we have done this last week against Benfica?
  
You like to score five goals in one game but against Benfica we couldn't score a goal. We cannot change that situation now and we need to enjoy the five goals we scored against Fulham.
  
Newcastle up next, how important was the win against Fulham in terms of taking your confidence up there to the North East?
  
It was important. We had two defeats and we needed to start winning and recuperate the confidence. It was really important for us and I think we will go there with the confidence you need for winning away at a difficult stadium like Newcastle.
  
Newcastle appear to be a completely different team than the one you faced on Boxing Day. Have you been surprised in their turnaround of results?
  
No, they have good players and it's a good club. They have good supporters also and it's normal if they have a little bit more confidence and good players they will win some games.
  
There has been more speculation about your future, can you give us the latest?
  
The latest is I am happy here. I want to say thanks to the supporters, the board, the chairman, the chief executive because everybody is supporting me all of the time. I will stay here, it's clear.
