CROUCH REVELLING IN STRIKER REVIVAL

Peter Crouch has spoken of his delight after netting his second goal of the week in Liverpool's impressive 3-1 victory at Newcastle on Sunday.
Crouch followed up his late effort against Fulham in midweek with a 10th minute header as the Reds continued their rediscovered goalscoring form at St James Park.

It took his tally for the season to ten, while the three points boosts Liverpool's chances of catching second-placed Manchester United.

"It was good, we did most of the work in the first half. It's pleasing, we scored five last week and three today so it's good," he said afterwards.
"We've always been playing well and getting results but it's nice to kill teams off and the last couple of days we've managed to do that. We could have gone on to score more."

WATCH REDS SMASH TOON FOR THREE

Liverpool kept up the pressure on Manchester United in the race for second place after goals from Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse gave the Reds a richly deserved 3-1 win over Newcastle United at St James Park on Sunday.
The Reds took charge of this match almost from the first whistle and they raced to a two goal lead through Crouch and Gerrard. And although Newcastle threatened a comeback when Ameobi pulled one back, the points were secured when Cisse scored from the penalty spot after Boumsong was sent off for bringing down Crouch.

The Reds smashed five past Fulham on Wednesday night and we didn't have to wait long to see them on the scoresheet again on Sunday. The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when, after a period of good pressure, Crouch ran in to head home from Jan Kromkamp's precise cross.

NEWCASTLE V LIVERPOOL: THE FINAL WORD

Liverpool continued to put the pressure on Manchester United in the race for second place with a 3-1 win at Newcastle. Here's the best of the post match reaction.

The Liverpool manager

"I am really happy because we played well, scored goals and could have won by a lot more than 3-1 in the end. We used three centre backs today and had Warnock and Kromkamp as wing backs and it worked very well. The movement of Kewell caused problems for Newcastle and we started the game very well. It is really important for the team to see the strikers scoring goals and it has given me a good problem for the next game. Peter Crouch showed today why we signed him as he scored a good goal, kept the ball and won headers. It was important to win and our idea is the same and that is win one game at a time, keep going and keep closing the gap on Manchester United."
Rafael Benitez

The Newcastle caretaker manager

"It goes without saying Boumsong is very upset - who wouldn't be?. There isn't a footballer that wouldn't be upset with what led up to the penalty and what led up to the sending off. He didn't make enough contact with what appeared to be a simple clearance and the ball evaded him. He then had a to make a decision on whether to attempt to tackle or let the player go in on goal. He made the decision to attempt to win the ball back, and I have no complaints with the penalty, it really killed us off. But what you won't get me to do is criticise him publicly because I was a player once of some sort and any manager or coach who criticised me or another player after a bad mistake wasn't a person for me, was not a good coach, was not a good manager. But that does not mean to say I will not sit down with Boumsong and go through the goals and share my view of where he could have done better."
Glenn Roeder

The Liverpool player

"It was good, we did most of the work in the first half. It's pleasing, we scored five last week and three today so it's good. We've always been playing well and getting results but it's nice to kill teams off and the last couple of days we've managed to do that. We could have gone on to score more."
Peter Crouch

The broadsheet newspaper

The Liverpool players' movement, vision and all-round professionalism meant they took full advantage. Their fresh system here, with Peter Crouch playing an advanced role and supported on either side by Harry Kewell and Djibril Cissé plus wing-backs, led to some energetic attacking and Rafael Benitez's side's pursuit of second place shows little sign of stuttering. Crouch had an early chance when he met Stephen Warnock's curling cross with a firm header but watched it drift wide. When handed a second chance, his accuracy was unerring. Jan Kromkamp chipped a diagonal pass towards the far post where Crouch snuck in between Boumsong, who missed the ball with an attempted headed clearance, and Peter Ramage, to head in from three yards. Liverpool were buoyed as Warnock and Kewell showed some splendidly swift one-touch football.
The local newspaper

This Liverpool performance had Rafael Benitez stamped all over it - a fluid 'team' effort. The three goals could have been more, but after the five-goal showing at Anfield last Wednesday, the goalscoring woes of just a week ago seem a distant memory. Even Djibril Cisse, without a goal in 2006, notched from the spot to make it five goals from the strikers in the past week. In all honesty it was a game Liverpool never looked like losing. Yes, they played much of the second half against 10 men after Jean Alain Boumsong was sent off for man-handling Peter Crouch in the box. And yes, Newcastle were poor, but make no mistake this was one of the best Liverpool performances of the season, a real tonic for the final push for second spot and FA Cup glory.
Paul Chapple, Daily Post

The tabloid newspaper

Steven Gerrard has played 46 club games so far this season but thankfully for Liverpool and England the Premiership's marathon man is showing no signs of slowing up. So far he has shouldered the burden of hauling Liverpool into the Champions League with his goals way back in July. Their Premiership season has largely been defined by his driving play. And in 13 weeks' time England will push him to the limit and hope a run to the final can extend his season into its 13th month. Yesterday Gerrard produce yet another awe-inspiring show, capped by a wonderful goal that took his tally for the season to 19. Gerrard is an amazing eight goals ahead of striker Djibril Cisse as the club's leading scorer. England fans can only pray that he stays fit - and fresh, if that is possible - for the summer. Gerrard netted Liverpool's second, and best, goal after 35 minutes. St James' Park was subdued and being given little to inspire them and it was no surprise when Liverpool took total command of an embarrassingly one-sided game.
Simon Bird, Daily Mirror

The Liverpool supporter

This was possibly one of the best (and most comfortable) performances I have seen from the boys this season. Agger looks so calm and his distribution is spot on most of the time. As for Kromkamp, he was fantastic marauding up and down the right, defending and attacking when needed. His performance leads me onto the three men at the back and why I think it worked so well. Warnock and Kromkamp played the wing back roles superbly well and Sami, Carra and Agger were rocks. Well done Rafa for the willingness to play a different formation.

Benitez fears for Gerrard fitness

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez fears the Football Association is risking the fitness of England's World Cup pair Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
Gerrard and Carragher play a second game in three days in the FA Cup tie against Birmingham on Tuesday.

The FA Cup quarter-finals are being played this week to help England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup plans.

But Benitez said: "All the English players, if they played twice in three days, will be more at risk."

And he added: "I'm sure you cannot see the best of players like Gerrard and Carragher just three days after another game.

"The England players playing two games in three days will be more at risk of injuries. The FA needs to look at it."

Gerrard has made 50 appearances already this season, while Carragher has played in 47 games.

Liverpool's FA Cup tie comes swiftly after their win at Newcastle on Sunday.

It is part of the plan to give Eriksson an extra week of preparation with his squad before this summer's World Cup in Germany.

Benitez added: "If you lose two or three players during the season, how can that help England?

"It is impossible to play twice in three days with just a day in between matches. A player is at his worst in terms of his physical condition two days after a game.

"He can be 70% three days after, but he certainly cannot play at his level and the risk of injury is so much more."

West Ham boss Alan Pardew criticised the heavy load last week after seeing his side come through a fifth-round replay against Bolton.

The Hammers faced three games in five days and Pardew responded by fielding a weakened side in their Premiership defeat to Portsmouth at the weekend in order to give his side some rest.

West Ham booked a semi-final place by defeating Manchester City on Monday

CISSE OFFERS APOLOGY TO NEWCASTLE FANS

Djibril Cisse has offered his apologies to the Newcastle United supporters for any offence he may have caused during Liverpool's 3-1 win at St James' Park on Sunday.
Having lifted his shirt to reveal a message to his wife Jude and newborn baby son Cassius after scoring from the spot during the second half, the French striker appeared to some home fans to be over-egging his celebrations in front of them.

Cisse, however, has explained that having waited months to find the net, he struggled to maintain his emotions.

"I didn't intend to be rude," Cisse told liverpoolfc.tv. "I was just really happy to score a goal after such a long time because scoring goals is what I love doing. I want to make it clear I respect the Newcastle supporters and if they thought I was being disrespectful to them, then I obviously apologise for that.

"Like all the strikers at the club, I have been desperate to find the net again and when the penalty went in, I was absolutely delighted. But, if my celebrations appeared disrespectful, that certainly wasn't my intention.

"It was a great team performance against a good side and the three points were more important than me scoring a goal. I think we have a really good chance of finishing second now but we have to keep fighting until the end. For now though, the only thing that matters is our FA Cup quarter-final match against Birmingham. We know it is going to be a hard game but we have confidence and I think we can win there."

FOWLER ON THE MARK AS RESERVES WIN

Robbie Fowler marked a return to his famous number nine shirt by scoring in the Reserves 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
Fowler played for 45 minutes and looked really sharp, worked hard and linked play superbly. His goal on the stroke of half-time was a real poacher's effort, reacting quickly to score from two yards out after Wigan's veteran keeper Gary Walsh had dropped a Jack Hobbs header.

Liverpool started the match with four of the heroes of Friday's FA Youth Cup semi-final success in Jack Hobbs, Godwin Antwi, Paul Anderson and Miki Roque who had entered the field in extra-time as a substitute, with Ryan Flynn and Craig Lindfield on the bench. Flynn and Lindfield both came on as late substitutes while Hobbs captained the team.

Wigan fielded a strong side featuring seven players with first team experience including Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly and Swiss international Reto Ziegler, so that gives you an indication of just how well the young Liverpool side played on the night.

At 0-0 the Latics missed a glorious chance after 37 minutes when Swedish striker Andreas Johansson, unmarked, somehow headed wide from eight yards out.

Scotland Under-21 international Robbie Foy had a lively game for Liverpool and scored the second goal after 65 minutes, finishing superbly from the edge of the 18 yard box. Foy also came close to scoring on several more occasions with two solo efforts. He drilled one low shot inches wide then forced an excellent save from Walsh.

For the second half Welsh under-21 international Ramon Calliste replaced Fowler in attack.

Calliste was in the thick of the action straight away and came close to scoring after 50 minutes when he got on the end of a superb right wing cross from Antonio Barragan, but his glanced effort was hacked away to safety from the six-yard box by James Heywood.

Liverpool goalkeeper David Martin didn't have a lot to do on the night but he made one brilliant save in the 77th minute to deny Connolly.

Calliste should have increased the scoreline with two guilt edged opportunities spurned late on, twice blazing over the bar from close range after excellent Liverpool moves.

This was a good display from Liverpool with Hobbs, Antwi and James Smith all commanding figures.

STUBBINS AND THE MAGIC OF THE FA CUP

Liverpool's FA Cup bandwagon rolls into Birmingham tomorrow for the second of this week's quarter-final ties and it's a match that will evoke fond memories for all the Liverpudlian pensioners out there.

It's nearly 60 years since the Reds and Birmingham last clashed at this stage of the world's greatest knockout competition and it was an occasion that helped create the Anfield legend that is Albert Stubbins.

I was too young to watch this great centre-forward in his heyday but having spoken extensively to many of his contemporaries down the years there's no doubt that the ginger-haired Geordie was an unbelievable player.

Until his dying day he was also a lovely intelligent man. I first got to know him in the seventies when he was working as a journalist. I kept in contact with him for the rest of his life and he never changed.

When Liverpool signed him from Newcastle in 1946 he was, at the time, the club's record signing. He'd scored an amazing amount of goals in wartime and was one of the most wanted figures in the game.

Keith on Stubbins
It's nearly 60 years since the Reds and Birmingham last clashed at this stage of the world's greatest knockout competition and it was an occasion that helped create the Anfield legend that is Albert Stubbins. The Reds triumphed 4-1 to reach the semi-final but this impressive victory was achieved largely thanks to one man – Stubbins. The hat-trick he scored that day is still fondly remembered by those old enough, and lucky enough, to have seen it, while his second goal, a never-to-be-forgotten diving header has since passed into Anfield folklore.

Together with the likes of Billy Liddell, Bob Paisley, Phil Taylor and Willie Fagan he fired the Reds to the inaugural post-war championship and club's first Wembley Cup Final appearance three years later.

Unfortunately for him, there were a lot of terrific centre-forwards about during this era – men like Tommy Lawton and Nat Lofthouse being just two prime examples – and I think because of this Stubbins does not get the modern day nationwide recognition his rich talents deserve, even though he was the only footballer to appear on the cover of the Beatles widely acclaimed Sergeant Pepper album.
It's different on Merseyside however. Here his achievements in the Red shirt have more than stood the test of time. He remains one of the most popular players to ever don the famous Liverpool jersey and it was the aforementioned FA Cup tie against Birmingham that most readily springs to mind when his name his spoken.

Until the infamous 'big freeze' of 1963, the winter of 1947 had been the worst in living memory and when Liverpool and Birmingham clashed in that season's FA Cup quarter-final Anfield was still covered in ice and snow.

George Kay's team had defeated Walsall, Grimsby Town and Derby County before being drawn at home to Birmingham City in the last eight and excitement was at fever pitch as the big game come around. Despite the adverse weather conditions a massive crowd of almost 52,000 were in attendance and they witnessed one of the most memorable FA Cup ties in Liverpool history.

Famously dubbed 'the goal in the snow', I know that it was a header he was really proud of. I last had the great privilege of talking to him just a few years before he sadly passed away in 2002 and inevitably this goal again cropped up in conversation.

Here was his take on it...

'The move that led to that goal actually came about because of something that had happened in a previous round. It was against Derby County, and during that particular match Billy Liddell made ground on the left win g and hit a terrific low ball across, which myself and Jack Balmer just failed to get to. I was annoyed because the ball needed just a touch and it would have been in the back of the net. The Birmingham match was pretty soon after and I thought to myself that next time Bill put the ball over I would anticipate him hitting it low and hard.
