Rafael Benitez has admitted that while he's been happy with Robbie Fowler's progress since re-joining the club, he expects to see the best of his new striker from now until the end of the season.  
Fowler, who returned to Anfield on a six-month deal in January, scored his first goal since his comeback on Wednesday against Fulham but Benitez has made it clear that he's in no rush to make a decision about whether or not to extend the player's contract.
  
"Robbie's goal against Fulham doesn't change anything in my mind," revealed Benitez. You cannot decide about a player's future on one goal. He must continue to work how he is currently working and then I will have a talk with him. It will be an honest discussion.
  
"I am happy with him so far. He's working hard, has a good character and he's a nice boy. I think the decision will come before the end of the season. It will not be based on whether Robbie scored three, four or five goals. There is no target. It is about how he progresses overall.
  
"Robbie has been working with our physios and he will be better in the next month than in the last three because they are working hard every day to get him as fit as possible. He wants to play for Liverpool for many more years.
  
"It would be good to see him train in pre-season, but we cannot wait that long because I have to make my plans and Robbie needs to know what he will be doing. All I do know at this moment is that to buy a Robbie Fowler who is fit and scoring goals would cost a lot, maybe £10m or more. Maybe he can be a fantastic player for this club again. If I say 'no' then we have to look for another striker."

REDS WIN AND KEEP SECOND IN SIGHT

Liverpool have kept up the pressure on Manchester United in the race for 2nd place after goals from Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse gave them a richly deserved 3-1 win over Newcastle United at St James Park today.

The Reds took charge of this match almost from the first whistle and they raced to a two goal lead through Crouch and Gerrard. And although Newcastle threatened a comeback when Ameobi pulled one back, the points were secured when Cisse scored from the penalty spot after Boumsong was sent off for bringing down Crouch.
  
The Reds smashed five past Fulham on Wednesday night and we didn't have to wait long to see them on the scoresheet again today. The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when after a period of good pressure Crouch ran in to head home from Kromkamp's precise cross.
  
It was a goal that was richly deserved after the Reds had put the home side to sword with a series of sweeping attacks and they might have been further in front just minutes later when Crouch just failed to connect with Kewell's inviting cross from the left wing.
  
Newcastle have enjoyed something of a revival since the appointment of Glen Roeder as caretaker boss and they began to creep back into the game when first Shearer shot wide and then N'Zogbia tested Reina.
  
But Liverpool scored a superb second goal through Steven Gerrard in the 35th minute to make it 2-0. It came when Cisse crossed from the right and, after exchanging passes with Crouch; Gerrard smashed a brilliant right foot shot past Given and into the bottom corner.
  
Liverpool were cruising, but they let Newcastle back into the game in the 41st minute when Ameobi beat the offside trap to head past a helpless Reina and make it 2-1. Television replays did show that Shearer was in an offside position, but he was adjudged not to be interfering and Ameobi's goal stood.
  
We wondered at half time if Ameobi's strike would change the complexion of the game, but we needn't have worried because the Reds re-established their two goal lead in the 52nd minute when Djibril Cisse scored from the penalty spot after Boumsong had brought down Crouch. And things got worse again for Newcastle when Boumsong was sent off for deprivingCrouch of a goalscoring chance.
  
The Reds now had a numerical advantage both on the pitch and scoreboard and they never looked likely to let Newcastle back into the game.
  
And the Reds will leave Tyneside this afternoon thinking they perhaps should have won by a much bigger margin. There were chances for Garcia and Cisse to extend the lead as Liverpool strolled towards the final whistle, but nothing should detract from a job well done.
  
It took two fantastic saves from Newcastle keeper Shay Given to deprive Xabi Alonso and Jan Kromkamp to keep the scoreline respectable as the clock ticked down, but the Reds had already done enough to inflict only a third home league defeat of the season on Newcastle.
  
It's Birmingham and the FA Cup next for the Reds and they will go St Andrews on Tuesday night with plenty of confidence after hitting eight goals in their last two games.

Rafael Benitez declared himself a happy man as he saw his new look formation work a treat in the 3-1 win over Newcastle United.  
The Liverpool manager used three centre halves with wing backs which gave the team greater width and the Reds caused all sorts of problems for the Newcastle defenders.
  
"I am really happy because we played well, scored goals and could have won by a lot more than 3-1 in the end," reflected Benitez.
  
"We used three centre backs today and had Warnock and Kromkamp as wing backs and it worked very well. The movement of Kewell caused problems for Newcastle and we started the game very well.
  
"It is really important for the team to see the strikers scoring goals and it has given me a good problem for the next game. Peter Crouch showed today why we signed him as he scored a good goal, kept the ball and won headers.
  
"It was important to win and our idea is the same and that is win one game at a time, keep going and keep closing the gap on Manchester United.
  
"It's crazy that we have another game in two days and I don't understand it, but it's a very important game against Birmingham in the FA Cup and that it why it is so important to have a good squad."

　　同紐卡素的比賽中，施斯在罰入點球後有些“得意忘形”，他在一次進攻後沖著紐卡素球迷吐舌頭，掀起了小小的波瀾。實際上除了罰中克勞奇創造的點球，施斯的表現並不穩定，踢飛了兩次進攻機會，其中沒有傳給位置更好的基維爾而選擇自己射門，讓擔任ESPN評論顧問的前利物浦球星麥馬拿文頗為惋惜：“如果比分還是0比0，這個決定就顯得很愚蠢了”。

　　在下賽季，克勞奇的身邊會是誰？狀態回勇的科拿，或是一張全新的面孔？總之，一周之內打進對手8球(周中5比1富咸)並不能掩蓋一個賽季以來的問題，利物浦尋找前鋒的路還要走下去，究竟是內部挖掘潛力，還是花錢另請高明，這要由賓尼迪斯決定，這也許將成為影響下賽季利物浦走勢的關鍵一步。

在3比1擊敗紐卡素後，利物浦主教練賓尼迪斯首先談到的是陣型的變化，他對352的變陣效果感到滿意。“我們今天使用了三名中衛，並且安排了沃爾諾克和克隆坎普兩名邊翼，這取得了很好的效果，基維爾的移動也給紐卡素制造了麻煩。”

　　事實證明，利物浦的變陣取得了針對性的效果。面對主場氣勢很盛的紐卡素，紅軍在防守時收回兩翼，沃爾諾克和克隆坎普變成兩名邊衛，五名後衛合力確保城池不失，施斯也回收至右路，陣型類似541，進攻時，兩翼中一人壓上，基維爾也游弋到左邊路，進攻的寬度增加，傳中球的次數也隨之增加，頭兩個進球都來自右路的傳中。

　　兩名賽季中加盟的球員對變陣起到了關鍵作用。21歲的丹麥中衛阿格爾發揮穩健，在卡拿格和海皮亞中間，他起到了清道夫的作用。所失一球是卡拿格造越位時失誤，與他關系不大，倒是謝拉特的進球過程中，阿格爾從後場帶球長驅直入，突入前場後分給施斯傳中，是發起進球的源頭。

　　本場是阿格爾第二次英超經歷，上一次主場1比1平伯明翰，賓尼迪斯稱他還需要適應比賽節奏，從本場表現看，年輕人的潛力不錯，在利物浦的陣容中，他既可以作為四後衛陣型中兩名主力中衛的後備，也能成為變陣三中衛的一顆棋子。

　　25歲的荷蘭人克隆坎普則是最大的驚奇。加盟之後，他被定位在右邊路，踢右中場的次數最多。本場作為需要照顧一條邊的右翼，克隆坎普上下自如，紐卡素以往活躍的恩佐比亞和後來挪到這邊的安利，都沒能從他這裡獲得突破。第10分鐘，克隆坎普在右翼得球，傳中助攻克勞奇破門，這腳精確的傳球博得了當年佔據利物浦邊路的麥馬拿文的好評，在為ESPN評球時，前利物浦中場稱荷蘭人的這腳傳球如此“優美”，剛好越過了保桑的頭頂。

　　阿格爾和克隆坎普的引進代表著賓尼迪斯的建隊理念，缺少中衛和右翼，現在有了考察和培養的人選。當然，一兩場出色只是令人欣慰的“跡象”，要想變為大部分場次穩定的“現象”，還需要比賽時間和經驗的積累，但至少人們可以看到利物浦在中後場厚度上的增加，現在最需要解決的，就剩下克勞奇身邊搭檔的問題了。

球迷擲糞便紅軍道歉

利物浦易邊後乘紐卡素後防犯錯擴大比數，保桑解圍失誤，情急下於禁區內拉跌呈單刀姿態的高治，球證毫不猶豫直指12碼點，更直接驅逐保桑離場。連續15場比賽「食白果」的法國前鋒施斯操刀射成3﹕1。紐卡素10人應戰下處「捱打」狀態，利物浦本有機會再添進帳，但入球心切的施斯欠缺角度下強行抽射，也不傳球予中間無人看管的基維爾，換來後者破口大罵。最終利物浦保持3﹕1勝局，繼續保持追趕曼聯的機會。

另外，利物浦就球迷劣行向曼聯道歉。利物浦球迷在上月足總盃16強主場1﹕0淘汰曼聯之役，向客隊球迷投擲排泄物及硬幣等雜物。經警方調查過後，利物浦球場運作經理普東向曼聯書面道歉，他說﹕「我對有人投擲糞便感到羞恥，這是懦夫的行為﹗我們已盡可能賠償予受影響的曼聯球迷。」

Newspaper reports today claim that Liverpool are prepared to offer up to £9million in the summer for striker Jermaine Defoe.

Manager Rafael Benitez tried to sign the 23-year-old during the January transfer window but Spurs rejected our late advances.

Initial reports had stated that Liverpool would try and Bag Defoe for around £11million but the latest claims suggest that Spurs will sell for £9million with Reds chief executive Rick Parry tipped to start negotiations with a cheeky £7million offer.

Meanwhile the same journalists behind the Defoe speculation also state that Rafa will try and sign Spurs centre-back Michael Dawson.

It's not the first time that Dawson has been linked with us as Gerard Houllier also tried to sign him.

The KopTalk editor is close to the Dawson family and that's why we have always maintained that the player would be keen on a switch to Anfield.

Reports claim that Rafa will offer £8million for Dawson in the summer.
