RAFA PREDICTING BIG THINGS FROM GONZALEZ

Rafa Benitez believes Mark Gonzalez's performances on loan at Real Sociedad have confirmed his view that the Chilean winger will be a success at Anfield.
Gonzalez has been in fine form since joining the La Liga club on loan after Liverpool failed in their original bid to secure a work permit to enable him to begin his career on Merseyside.

The Reds are hoping that obstacle will be overcome in the summer and that the 21 year old can prove his ability in the Premiership.

"Mark is playing really well in Spain. He's been one of the best players for Real Sociedad, and all the reports have been impressive about him," said Benitez.

"He has been playing good football against all the top clubs in Spain, including those who are doing well in the Champions League and include some of the best defenders in Europe.

"He has shown he can be a player who can be a fantastic signing for us when he is given the opportunity. I know he will be liked by our supporters because of the qualities he has with his pace, his technical ability and his bravery.

"I'm sure he will give us a lot of very enjoyable afternoons watching him play."

He added: "Mark was injured for a long time and needed to improve his fitness, but now he's back to the level he was when we decided to sign him."

CARRA HOPING SEASON ENDS IN SUCCESS

Jamie Carragher feels real progress has been made once again at Anfield this season and believes that winning the FA Cup would make the season an excellent one.
The Liverpool defender says there is a collective feeling amongst the whole squad that the Reds can go all the way and win the FA Cup, as well as keeping up the fight to try and finish second in the Premiership.

"If we win the FA Cup it'll be an excellent season," reflected Carragher.

"If we lose to Chelsea or lose in the final, it'll be a good season because we've progressed a lot in the league and picked up the [European] Super Cup.

"We're disappointed with the way the Champions League went but there has been progress made. Like I say, the FA Cup could make or break us.

"We aim to go really close next season in the Premiership. If we make a few signings in the summer, it can give us another lift again. We really need to challenge for the title and go as close as possible, or win it."

A TALE OF INTERNAZIONALE FRIENDSHIP

How did a team of Liverpool supporters end up being official guests at Inter Milan's recent home fixture against Lazio at the San Siro? Let Nigel Shaw explain all.

I've never known so much gratitude in all my life. We are just a humble bunch of Liverpool supporters who call ourselves iLFC, having responded to a call two years ago from our manager Andy Heaton on the Red and White Kop website for a fans team to enter The Northern Football Supporters' League. Then, at a tournament in Leeds last summer, we were drawn to play against a visiting team of Inter Milan fans from Italy and the first words they said to us as they shook our hands before kick-off that day was of course, 'Thank you for Istanbul! Grazie Reds!'

They beat us 1-0 with a dubious penalty but they were a great bunch of lads and naturally we supported them vocally in their match later in the same tournament against a Man United fans team who, of course, we'd already beaten. That support helped cement a friendship between our two groups before the Inter fans team eventually won the 'Plate' tournament that weekend.

Little did we know then that we'd end up with a warm invitation to Italy for a weekend of football and friendship almost a year later. Sure enough though, on March 17 2006, 18 Reds headed off to Milano to enjoy the Italian hospitality. As soon as we arrived, we were whisked off to the Inter supporters' favourite pub, where several of our hosts wore 'Grazie Reds – 25/05/05' T-shirts and insisted that we all re-watched the Istanbul final video. While the final was playing, we taught them some of our songs – 'We all dream of a team of Carraghers' proved a particular favourite with some of the Inter lads.

Later in the evening we realised that the bar owner, along with several other customers, were in fact AC Milan fans but they put up with our boisterous re-living of the triumph with good grace. All the locals seemed particularly impressed when they realised that there were 3 generations of Reds in our Kop choir and team, ranging from our veteran goalkeeper Harry Trow (58) to his grandson, striker Chris Trow (17). As the night wore on, speedy young Chris challenged all comers to sprint races outside the pub whilst Harry stubbornly refused a taxi and disappeared mysteriously into the night to stroll back to the hotel alone.

On the Saturday, it was a late breakfast before we all popped off to the central square opposite the cathedral and took souvenir photos outside the cafe where Football Italia's James Richardson usually does his round-up of the Italian sports papers. There's not much touristy stuff to see in Milan, so as skipper my only duty was to ensure that too much afternoon pizza did not ruin my players' highly professional preparation for the supporters' game, scheduled for 6pm at the Inter Youth Academy pitch on the outskirts of the city.

iLFC meet Inter Milan
At the shared AC / Inter museum we noticed that the most recent item on display was a match programme from Istanbul with no mention whatsoever of who the opponents were or what the result was! Fortunately, to remind everyone, there was some familiar 'Grazie Reds - 25.05.05' graffiti spray-painted in the Inter colours on a nearby wall!
Once again it was the Inter fans themselves who ferried us to the pitch and back in their own cars. Before the match, several gifts were exchanged and the Inter 'manager' Luca Renoldi was particularly delighted with our presentation of a framed picture of Jerzy Dudek saving one of the spot-kicks in Istanbul. Complete with snakes around the goalposts, as emblems of Inter, this picture was inspired by a banner displayed by the Inter Ultras in the last Milan derby match. (At this point I must thank the Liverpool FC PR Department, especially Olivia and Bev, for supplying us with some LFC publicity items to exchange, as well as some training tops to play in.)

We soon realised the Inter lads' cunning strategy: very few of the faces who were starting the match against us had actually been in the pub with us until the early hours the previous evening! Nevertheless we put up a great show during the first-half and with better finishing we could have done better than the 1-1 scoreline prompted by a nice finish from Rob Knowles after a floated Col Spreag free-kick. In the second half we had to do a bit of squad rotation and Inter suddenly brought on some classy overseas imports (believe it or not - members of the Scottish branch of the Inter Supporters' Club!). The final score was 4-1 to our hosts. Anthony Hornby got our Man-of-the Match award - an Inter pennant. And, yes Harry, it was tricky to judge the flight of the ball in those lights - particularly for veterans like us!

Everything had been meticulously planned by the Inter supporters and after the game they ferried us to a swanky restaurant. It soon turned into a cheesy disco when just the right amount of refreshment had been imbibed - our hosts introducing us to the unlikely delights of lemon liqueur as an after-dinner drink. While the rest of us headed home in taxis at about 3am, some worse for wear than others, eccentric 'keeper Harry had again wandered off into the night, this time on a random passing tram.

Grazie Reds!
Before the match, several gifts were exchanged with our Inter friends particularly delighted with our presentation of a framed picture of Jerzy Dudek saving one of the spot-kicks in Istanbul. Complete with snakes around the goalposts, as emblems of Inter, this picture was inspired by a banner displayed by the Inter Ultras in the last Milan derby match.
Sunday was all about our visit to the San Siro – or the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza as it should properly be known - as official guests. We learned this, and many other facts, during a complimentary tour of the joint FC Internazionale / AC Milan museum, where we noticed that the most recent item on display in the museum was a match programme from Istanbul… with no mention whatsoever of who the opponents were or what the result was!

Fortunately, to remind everyone, there were some familiar 'Grazie Reds - 25.05.05' graffiti spray-painted in the Inter colours on a nearby wall. We met the President of Inter's entire network of worldwide supporters' clubs and presented him with a football signed by the LFC squad (again thanks to the LFC PR department) and then it was time to take our complimentary seats in the guest area of the stadium.

Liverpool had kicked off at Newcastle half an hour before Inter kicked off against Lazio and we were all receiving text updates from St James' Park throughout. This proved tricky as we had to be careful not to jump up and celebrate a Liverpool goal when the wrong team was attacking at the San Siro! It was uncanny how the two matches followed the same sequence: both Liverpool and Inter went 1-0 ahead, then 2-0, 2-1 and a final score of 3-1 – with Inter's Alvaro Recoba the Man of the Match with two well-taken goals and a visionary assist. We were all impressed by the atmosphere created by the Ultras who hardly stopped singing for 90 minutes, though the 40,000 crowd meant the huge stadium was only about half full.

After the match it was time for a final beer with our hosts and a hearty toast in particular to Luca Renoldi who had been the genial host and efficient organiser of the whole weekend. We then discovered that the only bar in central Milan open late on a Sunday night has coffins for tables and skulls on the walls but at least Harry's tired bones felt at home there - before he once again wandered off into the night!

Thank you to all at FC Internazionale, Muratidentro (the supporters' team), Liverpool FC and the iLFC supporters' team who made this trip such an unforgettable experience and a great success in cementing international football friendships. We flew home to Liverpool on the Monday with very special memories.

CROUCH HOPING FOR WORLD CUP PLACE

Peter Crouch is hoping he can end an excellent first season at Anfield with a place in England's World Cup squad.
Sven Goran Eriksson's 23 man party will be announced next month and the England coach has already hinted Crouch has a good chance of being named among his strikers for the finals in Germany.

Crouch is taking nothing for granted, however, even though he has heard the positive comments coming from his international boss.

"It's a boost of course, if the manager is speaking highly of you then you have got a good chance," Crouch said.

"My manager at Liverpool believes in me and the England manager as well so it's obviously good for me at this moment in time.

"Every England player at the moment is desperate to be involved in the World Cup, I'm no different.

"I want to be involved, hopefully if the form is good, I've been in the last couple of squads, hopefully I can keep that going."

We have had great results and goals galore since the Fulham game. The week before this run started we were all a bit low after the Benfica and Arsenal results. If you ever needed reminding about the highs and lows of football, this period sums it up.

Of course, we stressed at the time that we would have to put those disappointments behind us and get back to winning ways. We have to applaud the lads for the way they regrouped and responded. Our exit from Europe was particularly disappointing, but we refused to let it knock us flat. Now we want to push on again.

We need to focus hard on finishing in the top three at the very least. An interesting situation is now developing with Arsenal in a great position to move into the final of the Champions League. The irony is that if the Gunners go all the way and win it, as we did last year, then their North London rivals Tottenham could miss out on Champions League football if they end up finishing fourth.

It's exactly the same as our situation when Everton faced possible exclusion because of our Istanbul glory night. UEFA clearly didn't want to be in that position again and decided that the Champions should be in the competition, regardless of their league position.

Of course, Arsenal still have a major challenge before we find ourselves discussing all the possibilities, but it's a sobering thought for the potential fourth team. We just have to ensure we are in the top three, preferably the top two, and looking forward to another exciting year in the Champions League.

Having said all of this, I really do wish Arsenal well. It was a fantastic quarter-final win over Juventus. We know how such a victory can be a springboard to greater things. The Gunners were quick to wish us well when we were in the same position last year. Their best wishes were genuine at every stage and it's nice for us to be able to reciprocate.

We want to reward our fans for their tremendous support

The countdown is on to our FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea. I've been asked my thoughts about playing at Old Trafford. There was a suggestion that the semis might be played in Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium, or Anfield South as our fans call it.

My first reaction is that I would prefer Old Trafford if the game was going to kick-off at 5.15 on a Saturday night. You must think about the convenience factor for your fans.

At the same time, the ticket allocation is another important thought. Old Trafford has a capacity of over 68,000 with further work still going on, but more could be accommodated in Cardiff.

It doesn't end there. I'm well aware of the debate about whether playing the semis at the final venue is a good thing or not. It can certainly dilute that special feeling of the final being unique in terms of venue and atmosphere.

All in all, I'm happy with Old Trafford. The great tradition has been for the semis to be played at club venues and I'm looking forward to the Chelsea challenge. Now that we are out of Europe, it would be a wonderful thing if we could go all the way in the FA Cup to reward our fans for their support.

We need to find answers to the offside confusion

It's always tremendous to win a derby match. People are still talking about a highly eventful game.

Everton were on a great run and after quarter of an hour it looked as if we would face an uphill challenge after Stevie was sent-off.

However, we were well organised throughout and the win was thoroughly
deserved.

I do have one issue. Can someone please tell me why Sami Hyypia's goal was disallowed when Shola Ameobi's goal was allowed for Newcastle just a week before?

Can someone also explain why Peter Crouch was ruled offside and Alan Shearer was not, in an almost identical situation? I'd love to know. The interpretation of the rule and the inconsistencies are absurd.

We have had two incidents in games recently that have not been turning points and so this is not sour grapes. On the other hand Robbie Fowler 'scored' against Charlton, only for it to be disallowed. It cost us two crucial points. Refs just need to get these decisions right. Some people say that we should simply return to the way it was.

You can't keep looking backwards, but the tampering with the rules has led to inconsistencies.

The traditional 'interfering with play' was replaced by 'inactive' play' to give referees something else to think about. From the early days of the Premier League, Terry Venables said that if a striker was not interfering with play then what was he doing in the pitch? It was a fair point.

When it comes to determining whether to invoke the 'active play' rule, assistant referees don't flag early which, in itself, is confusing for fans. They are told to give the ref time to make his mind up, but supporters immediately think the assistant refs have not made a decision.

They get annoyed because a player might have been allowed to continue his run, only for the flag to go up late.

Against this, the flags did go up early with Robbie and Sami and so this adds to the confusion. As far as I can see, we have been involved in three incidents this season.

We've had two disallowed while an opponent has had one. They say things balance themselves out, but clearly we need to end the confusion and the controversy that can follow.

Fowler in limbo over new contract at Liverpool

Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler admits he is still in the dark over whether he will be offered a new deal at Anfield.

Fowler rejoined the club on a six-month contract in January and is determined to prove to manager Rafael Benitez he is worth an extension.

The 30-year-old is now Liverpool's fifth highest goalscorer after finding the next in Saturday's 2-0 win at West Brom.

Fowler told the Liverpool Echo: 'It's a bit of a weird situation really because when most players have six weeks left of a season or contract they want their future sorted out.

'I'm different because I really don't mind waiting until the end of the season. I just want to stay here. I just hope I get a positive answer when it comes.

'I've had no indication what the decision will be yet. I've known from the start this is just a short-term deal and the decision won't be taken lightly by the manager.

'He's obviously not made up his mind yet, or if he has he hasn't told me about it. All I can do is sit and wait. If he comes to me and says there is a new contract there, no-one will be happier than me.'

Fowler's goal at The Hawthorns was his second since returning after also scoring against Fulham.

He added: 'It's not really for me to say if I've done enough. In an ideal world I'd love to have scored more goals, but I don't think I've let anyone down.'
