Rafa Benitez talks to liverpoolfc.tv as his players prepare for their first visit to the Emirates Stadium.
What's the state of play with Momo Sissoko?
He'll have an operation and we'll lose the player for three months. Maybe after the operation the surgeon will say two months, but normally it's three. It's clear he is a key player for us. When you need a physical approach to the game you can use him. Everyone knows how comfortable Stevie or Xabi are when they play with Momo. Now they need to do the job in the middle – maybe Gerrard, maybe Zenden. Both can play in this position with Xabi. It depends on the game.
I suppose it couldn't have come at a worse time going into such a big game with Arsenal?
Yes. Momo had four yellow cards and that's why we tried to protect him against Reading. We said we'll see him against Arsenal. It's the worst game for this to happen because Arsenal play a lot of short passes in the middle and Momo was a key player for us.
Arsenal have seemed to struggle so far at the Emirates though?
It's clear that the scores they've had in the new stadium are not the best, but I have been watching videos and they are playing well. They are creating a lot of chances. If they are not scoring goals it's because sometimes you have bad luck. Against CSKA Moscow it was unbelievable the amount of chances they had.
Changing the subject, are you surprised that reports about your future have again surfaced?
I was talking to my agent and he explained to me what the journalist asked him. It was a website. The journalist said the Italian league is good, my agent said it's fantastic. The journalist asked if Rafa could manage there, my agent said I am a good manager. After this they started changing words and at the end of the day you are in jail! I'm really happy here and I'm not thinking about another club. I am thinking about winning a lot of trophies with Liverpool.
Do you have any sympathy for Arsene Wenger with what's happened over the last seven days?
It's a bad situation and it's not easy because I do not know everything about the problems. It's clear the managers must show respect for other people because there are a lot of supporters and a lot of people around the game. If you can set an example, that's important, especially for the kids who are trying to learn things. But sometimes you cannot control your temper.
But don't fans want to see passion from their manager?
It's a passionate game but as a manager you have a responsibility. You can have passion, but after you must be polite. If a manager starts shouting and jumping, the supporters can get excited and you can have problems. You can't always stay calm and if it's an important game you must celebrate, but you need to control the emotions because there are a lot of people around and especially a lot of children. When I was a teacher in a school I remember a footballer scored a goal and went to the corner to kick the flag. After that I saw children in the school kicking the flag.
Is it important for you that your players are role models?
You want to win, but you want to win doing the right things. Sometimes when you play against other teams and you know they are tricking all the time and cheating, it's not easy. Sometimes I think we are too nice. We try to be good with the referee and the opponents. For this reason I think the video is important after the game. Then you can see the people who are cheating, and you can see the things the referee cannot control. Then the players would not dive, and maybe then the managers would be quiet.
Do you feel referees are given too much profile in the English game?
I know from experience in Spain that referees there can't talk in the press. The manager of the referees doesn't allow it. If the referee needs to explain every decision you would need two or three hours after a game. The most important thing is to help the referees. For me, video after the game is one option. I have a lot of clips of players diving from when we've played some teams, you might know who some of them are. Afterwards you could see this and then maybe players wouldn't dive in the box.
Moving on, if we'd said to you before the season that your team would not have scored an away goal in open play in the Premiership by November, you'd have said we were crazy?
I have a lot of respect for you people and I wouldn't say to you these things, but it's clear that it's unbelievable that we haven't scored more goals for the number of away games we've had. But you know, we scored four goals against Reading in the Carling Cup and now we are scoring in all the games.
A word on Craig Bellamy Rafa, how is his confidence after missing the penalty against Birmingham in midweek?
I say to him the same thing as I said to the rest of the players when we were not scoring goals and winning games. I said listen, we are professionals, and if you want to change something, you can't talk. You need to work harder and show people that you are good enough on the pitch. Next time he is in a position to try something, he must try. Otherwise he will not change anything. |
