"The surprise was Peter Crouch," said Mourinho. "A giant who would give even Benfica’s big defenders problems, did not play.

"Neither did Djibril Cisse, the fastest of them all and, therefore, the most dangerous attacking from deep.

“There must have been physical reasons, unknown to us, that might have affected the options."

路透倫敦電---利物浦周六以0-0主場戰平查爾頓，在與曼聯競爭英超亞軍的道路上痛失全取三分的良機。


查爾頓的挪威門將麥赫雷(米列)發揮出色，兩次化解了主隊法國前鋒西塞(施斯)的破門威脅。周三首次為英格蘭隊進球的克勞奇(確治)在周六比賽中一記頭槌攻門未果，錯過為利物浦建功機會。

主隊射手福勒(科拿)終場前不久大力施射破網，但被判越位無效，重返利物浦以來苦苦尋覓的進球仍然沒有降臨。

利物浦目前以55分名利英超次席，比領頭羊切爾西(車路士)落後17分，比少賽兩場的曼聯僅僅領先一分。

Liverpool moved up to second in the Premiership table but were frustrated not to have gleaned more from a disappointing goalless draw at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday evening.
  
Like in so many recent fixtures, the Reds enjoyed the greater share of possession and carved out the better goalscoring opportunities but failed to make their superiority tell.
  
Djibril Cisse and Peter Crouch were guilty of spurning the best of the goalscoring chances, while Robbie Fowler was denied a last-gasp winner for the second time since returning to the club by a linesman's flag.
  
To compound Liverpool's misery, Sami Hyypia suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to be substituted at half-time.

Fernando Morientes has spoken about his desire to win his first European Cup with Liverpool this May after admitting he's fallen in love with the greatest club competition in the world.  
The Spanish international won the European Cup with Real Madrid, was a beaten finalist in 2004 while on loan with Monaco and was in the stands as Liverpool recorded a British record 5th success in Istanbul last year. Now, he hopes to help the Reds overcome Benfica at Anfield on Wednesday and keep their dream of a trip to Paris alive.
  
"To me, the Champions League is the prettiest competition in the world," he says. "The day when I arrived in Monaco, the other players were, like, 'Oh, oh, it's Morientes'. I told them, yes, it is me. I am just a normal player. But they said, 'No, you have won the Champions League three times'. That makes you different in their eyes. They look at you as someone more important, almost like royalty.
  
"The atmosphere in the Champions League is even better than at the World Cup and when we beat Chelsea at Anfield in the semi-final, it was unbelievable, the best I've ever experienced. I even phoned home and said to my father, 'Dad, I've never seen anything like this'. He said, 'But you played for Real Madrid!' Of course, the atmosphere was good in Madrid on European nights but at Liverpool, it's unique, the people really lift the players.
  
"The Benfica coach, Ronald Koeman, was one of my idols as a child. He was a top-class footballer and now he is proving to be one of the best coaches in Europe. But his team is not one of the best in the world and we all believe we can beat them."
  
If Liverpool are to get past Benfica, they will have to start finding the net again. The lack of goals from recognised strikers recently is something that has mystified everyone at Anfield but Morientes insists it's certainly not down to a lack of effort.
  
"I don't know why I haven't got more but Peter Crouch and Djibril Cisse have had problems, too. But I'm really tired when I finish a game, so I know I have worked hard for the team and it is important that theother players are happy with you. In the Premiership, the defenders are all strong and physical and foul you a lot more than in Europe. The referees maybe permit more than in Spain, too, though I love this kind of football."

Steven Gerrard has sent out a defiant message to Benfica and the rest of Europe that Liverpool are not about to give up their Champions League title without an almighty fight.  
Liverpool trail Benfica by a goal to nil going into the return leg at Anfield on Wednesday and despite a recent lack of goals, the club captain is convinced the Reds have enough firepower to see off the Portuguese giants.
  
"There's no doubt we are a better team than we were last season when we won the European Cup, so let's just say that we aren't about to give up our trophy easily.
  
"The Benfica game is massive for us and I think everyone will see on the night how determined we are to retain our crown. We might be a goal down from the first leg, but the mood at Anfield is that we still have both hands on the trophy.
  
"No one relishes coming to Anfield these days. We had some fantastic nights there last season against Olympiacos, Juventus and Chelsea and we will need another one against Benfica.
  
"We need another high-tempo performance. We will be looking to strangle them out of the game in their own half just like we did to so many teams in Europe last year.
  
"From what we saw of Benfica in the first game, we believe we can certainly turn the tie around. In fact, if we get the first goal then I believe a few of their heads will drop – and once our fans sense that is happening they will be right on them.
  
"Teams struggle against us if we play with the right tempo. That is what has made us so difficult to play at Anfield. The good thing is that this year we have also showed an improvement in the Premiership. There are a few pieces still missing from the jigsaw, but we are looking to finish the season second behind Chelsea and also win the European Cup again."

Momo Sissoko has promised himself he'll play again this season and is keeping his fingers crossed the Reds can reach the Champions League final to allow himself an emotional return.  
The Liverpool midfielder is currently recovering from the serious eye injury picked up during the Champions League tie against Benfica in Lisbon last month but has assured fans he will play again.
  
"This has all come at such a bad time for me," he admits. "I feel I have been playing some of my best football and really settling into the English way. But I've promised myself I will play again before the end of May. Maybe the FA Cup or Champions League Final will be the game when I return."
  
The former Valencia star admits however that immediately after the injury, there were fears he'd never play again.
  
"It was the scariest moment of my life. The doctor in Lisbon told me there was a serious risk I would lose the vision in my right eye. Suddenly I had all these thoughts swimming around my mind and I asked myself: 'Is this the end of my career?'
  
"My morale was at rockbottom. I had severe headaches and the pain was unbearable. I couldn't deal with being in a situation where you didn't have any answers. I didn't know if everything in my life was about to crumble.
  
"As soon as we got back, the club organised a visit to a specialist. He told me the injury wasn't as bad as I had dreaded and that was like a massive weight being lifted from me.
  
"I saw the surgeon again this week and he's optimistic I will recover normal eyesight but he also says it may never get back up to 100 per cent. Of course, that is not so good but the outlook is better than I first thought.
  
"It's going to be frustrating for me with the Benfica game coming up but there isn't a lot I can do and there are no plans for an operation. I have to take at least two months off because, although I can open the eye, I am suffering from blurred vision. That will get a little better as each day passes.
  
"Our manager Rafa Benitez has suggested I go away and have a bit of a holiday because I think he knows how hard it will be for me to hang around the club and not be able to contribute."
