FROM THE SKETCHPAD TO THE KOP

Benitez spent £5.8m in the January transfer window
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says he must be allowed to strengthen his squad following the Champions League defeat by Benfica.
The Spaniard, who is reported to be the subject of interest from Inter Milan and Real Madrid, said: "We need to work harder in terms of looking for players.

"It is important to strengthen... and buy new players.

How did a chat amongst a group of friends in an Istanbul street cafe last May result in a brilliant new banner making its debut on the Kop on Wednesday night? Let Matthew Owen explain.

The final in Istanbul is already the stuff of legend. You couldn't move for splendid banners, perhaps the greatest collection ever assembled for a football match. The city and the stadium were ablaze with colour.

In a street cafe the morning after, a group of us discussed the banners on show. We talked about a banner of our own, perhaps getting a few Reds to group together and see what we could achieve. The results have been better than we could ever have hoped for.

When we reluctantly returned to England, Gareth posted the banner idea on independent fan site Redandwhitekop.net. From that point on this became a collaborative project. There was a fantastic response - lots of people liked the idea and wanted to contribute either with a donation or a design. Throughout June and July, the debate raged. We wanted to include our European titles and remember the Hillsborough victims, but how?

As ideas flooded in, they divided into two schools: the 'traditionalists' and the 'modernists'. Many banners were in classic Liverpool format but there were also interesting alternatives that reworked the traditional Liverbird format into a new design. We took a vote on the site and the Liverbird designs won, but although the most popular design was very good would it translate to a large format?

Time was passing by; in late October we passed the design ideas to graphic artist Kit Nelson. Taking the reworked Liverbird atop the Champions League ball as a starting point, Kit sketched the idea that became the 'Liverbanner'. We were knocked out. The image was bold and would work well on a large banner. Plus, we'd finally found someone who could draw a bird's claws!

This Liverbird had a fierce and defiant look. In one claw it grasped a scarf, symbolizing the supporters, in the other the Champions League ball, bearing the dates our club has won 'Big Ears'. We loved the space set aside for number 6 and the incorporation of the eternal flame. The resemblance to a Phoenix rising from the ashes was appropriate given the rebirth of the club witnessed in Turkey and the streets of Liverpool. It was a bold statement and we had to make it happen.

Using the initial design, we launched an appeal for funding across both the official and unofficial fans forums. We were delighted by the support from Reds worldwide. Some of the donations came in from people who might only see the banner in place once in a lifetime, if at all. Every donation large or small was great to see.

Not everyone liked the image; there was a body of opinion that favoured a traditional approach. Kit's design was a radical departure and, for some, this Liverbird was a step too far. They were fair criticisms and we could only ask people to suspend judgment until the completed banner was on the Kop.

We took heart however in the near universal support we received for the concept of fan-funded banners. We couldn't please everyone but if the project worked, we could do something different next time. We decided to set up a website devoted to producing banners so that those who had different ideas could get them into production.

As donations came in, we looked for a printer. We settled on
'Scanachrome'. They were the UK's number one large-format printers and, more importantly, their Skelmersdale department was full of fellow Reds! Andy Philips swiftly became an important person in the project as he produced umpteen test prints from Kit's revisions as we made colour changes to try and get the image just right. Scanachrome have been fantastic throughout and I can't praise them highly enough.
The final golden Liverbird on red background was inspired by the European Cup winning kits of the seventies. As a happy coincidence it gave the banner a slightly Spanish look - hopefully Rafa will like it! No doubt he'd approve of the teamwork which went into its production - it took hundreds of supporters to make this happen.

Our first chance to see the banner came last Saturday. The club kindly let us take the banner onto the Kop for a dress rehearsal. A project which began as a casual conversation in Istanbul was finally being brought to completion. Well, almost complete. The acid test was still to come in the shape of the crucial Benfica home leg.

Alas, my ticket-bearing friend was delayed and I had to stay outside as the rest of the team took the banner into the stadium and released it into the crowd. I wouldn't get to see the banner on the Kop after all. Standing next to Shankly and hearing the roar of the Kop gave me a chance to reflect on the near nine months since the banner idea began.

Getting the banner made wouldn't have happened without the efforts and assistance of a wide group of supporters, all keen to do their bit without any reward other than adding to the unique atmosphere within Anfield. Others I have to mention include Frank, the owner of the existing banner who has been very supportive, the HJC who have allowed us to store the banner in their offices and finally the club and individual stewards have been helpful throughout.
The Liverbanner made its first appearance on a night when the team needed the crowd to make the ground shake once more. It made two full circuits around the Kop and the general reaction has been positive. Hopefully it will add one more element to the unique atmosphere in Anfield. We've already started work on www.kopbanners.org so that more people can get involved in future projects and take their chance to influence the next one. Just with the Liverbanner, this will be an independent, non-profit making venture, entirely funded by supporters.

When you next see it on the Kop remember give it a cheer, and get those singing voices ready in the Main Stand and Centenary or that scary looking Liverbird might just give you a peck!

KOEMAN: WE HAD LUCK ON OUR SIDE

A delighted Ronald Koeman basked in the glory of Benfica's improbable Champions League victory over Liverpool but admitted his team had luck on their side over the two legs.
Goals from Simao and Miccoli sealed an emphatic 3-0 aggregate success for the Portuguese champions at Anfield last night as the Reds saw their European crown slip agonisingly away.

Liverpool were again left to rue a succession of missed opportunities during a frustrating 90 minutes for the home fans and Koeman said afterwards: "In the first 30 minutes they played well and had two or three big chances to score.

"We scored the goal from Simao and we played better. In the second half they tried again - but they did not have the opportunities they had in the first half.

"We needed to be lucky. If you are not lucky you cannot beat a team like Liverpool."

WATCH NOW: HOW THE DREAM DIED

Having lit up Istanbul with the most glorious European final ever last May, Liverpool's hopes of making it to Paris this year were killed off on a frustrating night of missed opportunities at Anfield. Watch how it happened online now.
Liverpool's bid to retain the Champions League title collapsed after goals from Sabrosa Simao and Fabrizio Miccoli gave Benfica a 2-0 win at Anfield on Wednesday night to complete a 3-0 aggregate win for the Portuguese Champions.

Rafa's side were bidding to overturn a first leg deficit for the first time since 1991 after losing 1-0 in Portugal a fortnight ago but, not for the first time this season, they were made to pay for missing a host of early chances when Simao put the tie beyond them with his wonder strike.

The Reds kicked off knowing they would need to beat Benfica by two clear goals and they were almost off to the dream start after just 11 minutes when Crouch collected Garcia's pass and saw his shot deflected against the post with the goalkeeper beaten. Unfortunately it was an early sign of further frustration to come.

ALONSO: THE FUTURE REMAINS BRIGHT

Xabi Alonso surveyed the wreckage of Liverpool's Champions League campaign and insisted there is still much to look forward to this season.
Like the majority at Anfield last night, Alonso cut a forlorn figure as he left the stadium following the Reds' miserable 2-0 defeat to Benfica.

Coming on the back of 1-0 first leg loss in Lisbon a fortnight ago it's a result that confirmed the premature end of Liverpool's reign as European Champions.

But amid the bitter sense of disappointment, the Spanish playmaker has offered words of hope to the 'superb' fans who gave the team their unrelenting support throughout a frustrating 90-minutes.

He says: "We have to look forward. We want to finish second and win the FA Cup. The first 20 minutes we had a lot of good chances to score. When they scored they put themselves in a really good situation.

"By the end it was impossible for us and we're really disappointed. We wanted to repeat our triumph of last season.

"We feel we have a better team than last season and could have won it again, but in the knockout anything can happen.

"It's like Charlton in that we created a lot of opportunities but couldn't score the goal. We have to be worried about this. To win games, obviously, you must score goals. This is something we'll have to analyse and work on.

"Scoring is not just the exclusive job of the strikers. The midfielders have responsibility, too."

Alonso reserved special praise for the Liverpool fans and believes their fanaticism will ensure Rafael Benitez remains in the Anfield hot-seat for a long time, despite recent speculation about his future.

"The crowd was superb and you can't ask for more than this. At 2-0 down they knew we were out of the Champions League, but they were still singing and making us feel their support," he adds.

"It's been a disappointing night for Rafa but I know he's really focused and committed to the club.

"He realises how passionate this crowd is and how much they adore him. It would be impossible for him to find another crowd like this.

"Our crowd is so special because they react as well when we're feeling low as when we've had success.

"I'm not worried about the situation with Rafa and the rumours. I know how he feels about the club."

WATCH NOW: EXCLUSIVE RAFA INTERVIEW

Rafael Benitez today spoke to Liverpoolfc.tv about the disappointment of the night before, how the supporters did the club proud and why our season is far from over. Sign up for an e-Season Ticket and you can watch the interview now.
The following questions were put to Benitez to answer:

1. Rafa, you've had some time to reflect on both the performance and the result, how are you feeling today?

2. The looks on the players faces as they left the pitch at the end spoke volumes. Can you describe the mood in the dressing room after the final whistle?

3. Even in defeat, the Liverpool supporters emerged winners on the night. How did you feel as the fans chanted your name, sang You'll Never Walk Alone and applauded the Benfica players off the pitch?

4. You spoke before the game about how you had confidence that your team could score the two or three goals required to qualify. In the end, they couldn't score one. Do you feel let down by your players?

5. Liverpool had three clear chances to score during the opening 30 minutes and many fans believe the missed chances proved more costly than the mistake at the back which led to Benfica's goal. How do you see it?

6. Against both Charlton and Benfica, the post-match talk has centred around chances missed. When does bad luck in front of goal become poor finishing from the players paid to score the goals?

7. The game has gone now but looking back with hindsight, is there anything you would have changed about your team selection, tactics or substitutions?

8. Immediately after the game you spoke about lifting the players for the game against Arsenal. Has this weekend's game taken on new significance?

9. Fans will be looking for a reaction from this defeat on Sunday. How difficult will it be to lift the players?

10. The European dream may be over for this season but do you think there's still an opportunity to make a success of this season?

11. And finally, after going out of the tournament on Tuesday, Jose Mourinho claimed he wanted Benfica to go on a lift the European Cup. Who would you like to see triumph in Paris?

BENITEZ: WE MUST ALL WORK HARD TO IMPROVE

Rafael Benitez has spoken of the need for improvement in the aftermath of Liverpool's Champions League exit and assured fans that everyone at the club is working hard to achieve this.
Speaking at a Melwood press conference on Thursday afternoon, Benitez was in a solemn mood as he reflected on the disappointing events of the previous night.

But rather than dwell too long on the relinquishment of their European crown, the Liverpool boss is looking ahead with optimism to the remainder of the season.

"The players are disappointed but we cannot change what has happened and we now must move onto the next game, keep going and try to correct the problems," he says.

"We must improve and to do that we need to continue to work hard and sign more good players. Every big club always needs to be on the lookout for new players so this is no reaction to last night, it's normal.

"I have a contract here and I want to see us improve this year and in the future. Unfortunately, the prospect of generating extra income from a run in the Champions League is no longer a possibility so we must work with what we've got.

"Rick Parry and the board are working hard to find solutions and I am working closely with our scouting department. We all want to progress and already we have signed Paletta and Gonzalez to help us achieve this.

"In football though, nothing changes after just one game. We are no longer in the Champions League but that does not mean we are a worse team than before.

"I am happy with the players we have here and they are not thinking about their futures, they are thinking only about winning the next game. We are in two competitions and are fully focussed on them. Our players want to finish second in the Premiership, win the FA Cup, and give their best for the club and supporters.

"Playing in four competitions was not easy, there were a lot of games and it was really difficult. The fact we now have just two competitions left may make life a little easier. It's always easier with less games.

"Of course, we need to start scoring goals. The strikers are desperate to score and we must ensure that we continue to create chances for them."
