REDS IN CHARGE AFTER FIRST LEG

Liverpool are in pole position to reach the final of the FA Youth Cup after goals from Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield gave them a hard fought 2-1 win over Southampton in the 1st Leg of the Semi Final at Anfield tonight.
Steve Heighway's side took charge of this match with two goals in the opening 13 minutes and although McGoldrick pulled one back for Southampton they will be pleased to be taking a lead to St Mary's for the return after a tough match.

The young Reds swept aside Carlisle 6-0 in the last round, but they will have expected a much tougher assignment against a Southampton side that went all the way to the final last year before being beat by Ipswich.

It was the Saints who threatened first when McGoldrick hit a long range shot over in the first minute, but Liverpool were soon making inroads of their own when some good control and a smart pass from Anderson almost created a chance for Lindfield.

That proved to be a sign of things to come because the Reds soon took a 6th minute lead through defender Jack Hobbs. It came when Adam Hammill won a free kick on the left and he picked himself up to cross to Hobbs, who finished into the top corner with a clever flick of the boot.

The goal was a catalyst for a series of Liverpool attacks and they doubled their advantage in the 13th minute through Craig Lindfield. Lindfield was the hero of the last round when he scored a hat trick and he was on the scoresheet again tonight when sliding in to convert Barnett's cross.

The Reds were well on top, but Southampton did come here with a good reputation and they slowly managed to claw their way back into the game and McGoldrick had a shot deflected just wide.

But while the Saints were playing with a lot of promise, it was still Liverpool who were creating the game's most dangerous moments and Lindfield almost made it 3-0 in the 35th minute. The chance came when Paul Anderson, whose pace was to cause problems all evening, sped down the right and crossed to Lindfield, who stabbed the ball just the wrong side of the post.

The second half kicked off with Southampton in the ascendancy and they got themselves back into the game in the 54th minute when David McGoldrick ran through to make it 2-1 with a low finish. There was no disputing Saints' supremacy in the first quarter of the second period and it took a great save from Roberts to stop Dutton-Black making it 2-2 soon after.

The Saints continued to press hard for an equalizer and De Carvalho and McGoldrick both went close as the Reds struggled to wrest control of midfield. Heighway replaced Parsonage with the fresh legs of Ryan after 70 minutes as his side attempted to regain the poise they had in the first half.

But it was their visitors who continued to carve out the better chances and they again came close to equalizing in the 81st minute when Dutton-Black's long range effort came back off the inside of the post and flashed across the face of the goal.

Liverpool responded with an attack of their own and Anderson forced the Saints' keeper into a good save with a left footed shot. But Heighway sensed that further fresh legs were needed and he replaced Lindfield with Nardiello late on.

In the end the Reds had done enough to merit their victory and they will travel to Southampton in seven days time with a real chance of making their first FA Youth Cup Final since 1996.

SUNDAY'S VISIT TO HIGHBURY WILL BE EXTRA SPECIAL

There is a little bit of history attached to our next Premiership game. It will be the last time we play at Highbury in the League as the Gunners prepare for their move to the new Emirates Stadium.

Highbury, with its famous Marble Halls, remains one of my favourite grounds. I've always enjoyed going there. The entrance to the Main Stand has a real touch of class.

Arsenal v Liverpool games inevitably have an edge. I'm sure this one will have a special meaning for both sets of fans. Arsenal supporters are revelling in every match at Highbury right now as the countdown continues. The famous stadium will soon be just a memory, but it highlights the challenge facing all Premier clubs and that includes Liverpool.

We are all working tirelessly to generate new and improved revenues so that we can continue to compete at the highest level.

We have seen the likes of Bolton, Sunderland and Middlesbrough all grasping the nettle and leaving historic old venues for new homes, but "old" is the key word in the case of these clubs. Roker Park, Burnden Park and Ayresome Park had all seen better days and had each reached the end of their sell-by dates.

That is not the case with Highbury. It's still one of the great venues, but its limited capacity has forced the Gunners to take this step.

Many people have suggested that the investment in the new stadium has prevented the Gunners from maintaining their impetus on the pitch. I'm not sure if the two are connected although I'm sure Arsenal would have preferred to leave Highbury on a real high. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees in football.

It forcibly reminds you that the number one priority is always success on the pitch.

I don't think we will ever see England back at Anfield

It's always a surreal experience when you hand your football stadium over to a third party for a major event. It was no different last week when Anfield became FA headquarters for the day as England prepared to take on Uruguay.

You are used to standing to attention for "You'll Never Walk Alone" and revelling in the sea of red around our famous stadium. When you hear Cockney accents on the Kop, listen to an operatic rendition of the national anthems and check out banners highlighting an array of towns and villages on the English map, you know that it's home - but not as you know it.

Of course, we were delighted that Anfield proved to be a winning stage as Sven-Goran Erikkson's men continued to edge towards that crucial World Cup challenge in Germany.

Parry on England's LFC influence
We all wish England well in Germany. Peter Crouch has stated his case to be included. Steven Gerrard, and Jamie Carragher are already stalwarts in the squad. Meanwhile, Sammy Lee and Ray Clemence exert their influence in the background, having been brought up on a quality diet of Shankly, Paisley and Fagan - three of the greatest managers of all time.

What is remarkable is the fact that Sven, who steps aside after the summer tournament, will never have managed an England team at Wembley.

Former Kop hero Kevin Keegan was the last international boss to lead the country at the national stadium. Of course, that game is remembered for another Anfield-related stat. Dietmar Hamann became the last player to score at Wembley as Germany ruined the farewell party under the old Twin Towers.

In the five years since that game, with the stadium demolished and England effectively on tour throughout the provinces, international matches have been staged at Anfield on three occasions.

Sven actually watched his first ever competitive game as England boss at Anfield, a World Cup qualifier against Finland in 2001. The international side returned here the following year for a friendly against Paraguay.

The Uruguay friendly, to be followed by further preparation games against Jamaica and Hungary at Old Trafford, could be the last time England step outside of London for a home game.

After the World Cup it will be Wembley all the way, not least to help cover the astronomical costs of the new venue. I don't think we will ever see England back at Anfield and so keep your matchday programme from last week. It could become a real collectors' item.

I was delighted to see Peter Crouch rise to score a tremendous equaliser against Uruguay. It was a great header and he got a tremendous salute from the fans, all very different from the reception he got at Old Trafford in a previous game.

We all wish England well in Germany. Peter has stated his case to be included.

REDS FANS BACKING BARCA FOR EURO GLORY

Liverpoolfc.tv can reveal that the team most Liverpudlians would like to see succeed the Reds as Kings of Europe is Barcelona.
Following our disappointing exit from the competition in midweek dreams of sixth European Cup coming home to roost at Anfield have been put on hold for another year.

But with the quarter-final and semi-final draw taking place today Liverpool fans have declared that their Champions League support is now with the Catalan giants.

In a poll that has been running on this website since Thursday morning, almost 2,500 voted overwhelmingly in favour of Barca when we asked which club they'd now most like to see crowned European Champions for 2006.

Second, with 50 per cent less votes, came Sunday's Premiership opponents and the last surviving British side Arsenal, then Gerard Houllier's Lyon and our last sixteen conquerors Benfica.

OWENS: YOUTH CUP IS SPECIAL

Academy coach John Owens is hoping the grand surroundings of Anfield can once again inspire the Liverpool youngsters to another impressive FA Youth Cup win tonight.
The Reds youth team take on Southampton in the semi-final first leg, having already enjoyed victories in front of the Kop against Cardiff, Ipswich and Carlisle in this season's competition.

And with a place in the final for the first time since 1996 at stake, Owen is relishing this latest test against last year's runners-up.

"Sometimes Anfield can enthuse the opposition as well as our own players to play there. It is a big game," he says.

"It will be no different from the other games we have played. But there are things that are different that make the Youth Cup special.

"It is a knock-out, it is another night-time game with the floodlights, playing at Anfield with a bit more of a crowd than they are used to - it all adds to the occasion.

"They have to enjoy those, but also block it out once the game starts and try and play their best individually and as a team. Then also you hope for that bit of luck that gets you the right result.

"We need to try and get playing our own game. There are no heavy tactical plans, like getting 1-0 up and defending. We'll just try and play our normal game.

"It will be similar to the Ipswich game. Ipswich was tough and Dave Roberts in goal had a very good game. I remember two saves in particular. It was very close and this one will be the same. We have watched Southampton and they are a very good side."

CARSON JOINS OWLS ON LOAN

Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on loan for a month. The deal is effective from today.
The 20-year-old travelled to Hillsborough today and final clearance should now come from the Premier League this afternoon. The former Leeds keeper will reinforce an Owls back line that has had only one senior goalkeeper since David Lucas injured his knee ligaments at Millwall last month. Carson has made nine appearances for the Reds, including two Champions League outings this season, and will wear number 22.

RIISE, SISSOKO AND HYYPIA INJURY UPDATE

John Arne Riise is facing up to three weeks on the sidelines with the hip injury that kept him out of Wednesday's Champions League tie against Benfica.
Riise sustained the injury in last weekend's goalless draw with Charlton and was ruled out of the midweek European tie as a result.

Now Rafael Benitez has confirmed that he expects to be without the Norwegian international for the next couple of weeks.

The Liverpool boss, however, has better news to report regarding Momo Sissoko.

The Mali midfielder suffered a serious eye injury in the first leg of the Champions League tie against Benfica and initial fears were that he'd be out for the remainder of the season.

Sissoko is now back training at Melwood and Benitez says: "Hopefully we'll see him back soon. His injury has been a problem for us because when he plays he gives more freedom to other players.

"But I've seen him running and touching the ball at Melwood this week, which was a welcome surprise."

Benitez also added that he's hopeful Sami Hyypia will be fit for Sunday's trip to Arsenal, after the big Finn missed the last two games with a hamstring injury.

"Sami is better. He's not yet 100% but I hope to see him fit for the weekend. He's training and improving."

MEET THE POTENTIAL KOP STARS OF THE FUTURE

As the Liverpool youth team make their final preparations for tonight's FA Youth Cup semi-final first leg against Southampton, we present to you the potential Kop stars of the future...
David Roberts

Position: Goalkeeper
Date of birth: 10/12/88

A strong willed keeper from the Wirral who was part of last season's under-16 squad. Dave is a highly promising custodian and one of the lynchpins of his age group. His form this season has been impressive, especially in the Youth Cup.

Josh Mimms

Position: Goalkeeper
Date of birth: 5/8/89

Son of former Everton and Tottenham keeper Bobby, like his dad Josh is a goalkeeper and hails from Rotherham. He joined the club during the summer of 2005 and is the youngest full-time scholar at the Academy.

Stephen Darby

Position: Right-back and captain
Date of birth: 6/10/88

Maghull-born Stephen is of slight build but can more than hold his own when up against big strong opposition players. Boasting a good positional sense, he reads the game well and is very clever with his distribution of the ball. Stephen can also play at left back.

Jordan Holmes

Position: Right-back
Date of birth: 12/1/88

A right-back who can also play at centre-half, Jordan joined the Academy aged 14. He likes to attack, can cross a ball well and boasts pace among is many other attributes.

Godwin Antwi

Position: Centre-back
Date of birth: 7/6/88

Ghanaian defender who joined the Reds from Real Zaragoza in the summer of 2005. Tough and uncompromising, he's a regular in the reserve side and has also operated as an emergency centre-forward at times this season.

Jack Hobbs

Position: Centre-back
Date of birth: 18/8/88

Highly-rated defender who joined the Reds last summer from Lincoln City following a successful trial spell at Melwood. Another reserve team regular, he can also play in the centre of midfield. Regarded as a hot prospect.

Robbie Threlfall

Position: Centre-back
Date of birth: 25/11/88

Operates on the left side of the central defensive partnership, Robbie is an intelligent footballer who hails from the Woolton area of Liverpool. An excellent passer of the ball, he reads the game well and would much prefer to find a team-mate than lump a long ball out of defence.

Miki Roque

Position: Centre-back
Date of birth: 8/7/88

Spanish youngster recruited from Lleida before the start of the current campaign. Highly-regarded as a bright prospect, he can also operate in midfield but is only just returning from a hamstring injury sustained in recent reserve win over Everton.

Ben Parsonage

Position: Winger

The only schoolboy member of the current Youth team squad, Ben is a right-sided player who has been in good form for the under-16s this season. Made his debut at this level in the previous round against Carlisle and showed enough to suggest he has a bright future ahead of him.

Ryan Flynn

Position: Centre-midfield
Date of birth: 4/9/88

A central midfield player who can also play out wide, Ryan is from Falkirk and joined the Reds during the summer of 2005. He has a great attitude and is a real hard worker with a good touch.

Charlie Barnett

Position: Right-midfield
Date of birth: 19/9/88

Hailing from the Everton area of the city, Charlie may be a boyhood Blue but his commitment to the Reds has never been in doubt. A right-sided midfielder he is excellent on the ball, fast and a good dribbler.

Jimmy Ryan

Position: Centre-midfield
Date of birth: 6/9/88

Maghull-born Jimmy can boast a good work-rate and strong shot among his many attributes. A never-say-die competitor, he has come through from last season's under-16s side and is a quality player.

Paul Barrett

Position: Left-midfield
Date of birth: 15/9/87

Joined the Reds Academy after being released by Manchester City in September 2004. Quickly established himself as a regular in the under-18 side and was soon turning out for the reserves. An exciting and creative player, he's equally adept at beating defenders or executing a killer pass.

Adam Hammill

Position: Winger
Date of birth: 25/1/88

A left-winger from Seaforth with great potential, Adam has just started training on a full-time basis at Melwood. Loves to take on defenders and is also a good crosser of the ball. A regular member of the reserve team squad and a very good prospect.

Paul Anderson

Position: Winger
Date of birth: 23/7/88

Talented winger who signed for Liverpool before Christmas from Hull City in a swap deal that saw John Welsh move in the opposite direction. Craig Lindfield

Position: Striker
Date of birth: 7/9/88

A tall, slim striker from the Wirral, Craig possesses fine aerial ability and has come through the ranks at the Academy. He can lead the line well and has so far netted five times during this season's Youth Cup campaign, including a hat-trick against Carlisle in the previous round.
