RAFA BACKING FOR UNDER-FIRE FRONT MEN
Rafael Benitez is backing his under-fire strike-force to prove their critics wrong and regain the scoring touch that will help Liverpool bounce back from the disappointment of defeat to Benfica in the Champions League.
Lack of goals from the front men is becoming an increasing concern for everyone at Anfield with Peter Crouch the only forward currently at his disposal to have netted since the turn of the year.
The Reds paid the ultimate price for this profligacy on Wednesday night when they waved goodbye to their aspirations of a sixth European Cup after failing to overturn 1-0 first leg deficit against the Portuguese champions.
But Benitez still refuses to condemn his shot-shy strikers and is confident they have the ability to silence the doubters by ending their goal drought very soon.
"I am sure that we will score enough goals between now and the end of the season to be at the top of the table," says Benitez defiantly.
"You can see Morientes is a very good finisher in every training session. Why not on the pitch? Maybe it's luck. It's the same with Fowler. Cisse scored 23 or 26 goals in France, but sometimes it's luck. I think Fernando has experience now and knows the English style.
"Wednesday was a Champions League game, a different competition. At the moment, I think the most important thing is to support my players because they are working so hard.
"The lack of goals is worrying, for sure. As a manager, you cannot depend always on the defenders. If you continue creating chances, you will score.
"Crouch scored 12 or 13 last season. Morientes normally scores a lot. Fowler you know. Cisse is the same. It's just about time.
"How much time did we talk about Crouch at the beginning of the season. When he scored, people's attention switched to Morientes. I think the players are not stupid.
"We have 10 games and they know we need to score goals, and we need to score in the FA Cup. They need to continue working. If you want to change something, you can't hide. You have to work harder out on the pitch. If a striker has no confidence, he needs to work harder to score that first one. Work harder. Try to score next time.
"I'll talk with them, but it's up to the players to get on with it. In the end, if you're standing in front of the goalkeeper with the ball at your feet, it's up to you. I'll think we'll change this problem this weekend." |
