Gerrard urges Owen rethink

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has urged Rafa Benitez to move heaven and earth to bring Michael Owen back to Anfield.

Ahead of Sunday's high-profile clash with Arsenal, Liverpool's talisman has underlined his belief that the signature of the Newcastle striker would solve much of the goal-shy Reds' shortcomings.

Liverpool had been strongly tipped to land the England international last summer but, upon leaving Real Madrid, Owen pitched up on Tyneside instead.

Despite Owen's choice, Gerrard has reiterated that his former team-mate would rather have made the switch to Anfield had the European champions shown a greater determination to sign him.

"I know Michael Owen wanted to come here," Gerrard told the Sunday Times.

"I have got a good enough relationship with him to know that.

"That he didn't was down to Liverpool not making it happen, rather than Michael not wanting to come."

The Reds' profligacy in front of goal has cost them dearly in recent weeks in the form of dropped Premiership points and, most pertinently of all, in a disappointing 3-0 aggregate defeat to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League.

Peter Crouch's failure to convert a seemingly straight forward first half chance on Wednesday was the precursor to Liverpool's Anfield demise.

Gerrard now claims The Reds would be well served to find a goal-poaching partner for the 6 foot 7 inch Crouch and there is little doubt that Owen would fit the bill.

"It's difficult for me to say what difference he might have made the other night, but Michael Owen scores goals," added Gerrard.

"Domestically, in Europe and at international level he has proved that.

"Someone asked me after Wednesday's game if I would like him back, and it's a silly question ... of course I would love to have him back.

"Statistics don't lie - I'm not going to disguise the fact that we need a poacher. The problem we have got is obvious.

"Peter has never been prolific, and I don't think he is ever going to be.

"He's a target man, you will only get the maximum out of him if you play him alongside a prolific striker, and we have not got one at the moment."

Gerrard has also moved to quash speculation that Benitez may be about to up Anfield sticks and head back to the continent with both Real Madrid and Internazionale confirmed admirers of the Spaniard.

Gerrard claims Benitez reassured the player of his own future last summer by claiming he himself sees his future at Anfield for the next 10 years.

"When all the speculation was happening about me, Rafa told me he wanted to be here at Liverpool for 10 years," Gerrard told the Sunday Express.

"So if that's the case he should not be going anywhere."
