MORIENTES: MADRID ARE ENVIOUS OF US
Fernando Morientes has spoken of his pride and honour to be part of the Liverpool squad for the FA Cup Final and revealed his former team-mates at Real Madrid are envious of the success Liverpool have enjoyed recently
The Spanish giants have had a barren spell in recent times while Liverpool under Rafael Benitez have won the Champions League and are now preparing for the FA Cup Final.
"It is true to say that Madrid have not enjoyed the best of times with what they have won over the last few years and the people there that I keep in touch with, such as Casillas and Salgado, they are envious," Morientes revealed.
"I have had calls from them and from Raul and my other friends who are still at the club, and while they haven't shown jealousy exactly, maybe they have been envious because I'm playing for this club with a great reputation in Spain.
"Liverpool have a really big stature in Spain. They always have done. They're a bit envious of the success we've had. They have not had any finals at all in three years, and no medals, and we have been to many finals. They tell me they are happy for me, but maybe they are also a little envious."
The Spanish international also spoke of his burning desire to really make a name for himself at Anfield and prove to people he can be a big success in England.
"This is not my last game for Liverpool, not at all," added Morientes. "I said halfway through the season that I am about halfway through my job here.
"I have got two years left on my contract and as of today, unless anything out of the ordinary happens, I see myself starting the next season at Liverpool.
"It's a journey I'm on with Liverpool. I am only halfway through my journey and would like to reproduce the form that I had at Real Madrid and Monaco.
"Of course I will always be connected with Madrid, just as Gerrard and Carragher are with Liverpool. I had 14 happy years in Spain but I don't ever plan to go back as a footballer. I came to England because I saw it as my chance at this stage of my career to enrich myself as a player and a person.
"It would be a dream to score in the FA Cup Final, it would be a great moment in my career and a great thing for me.
"I don't know about the best moment in my career because, thank God, I have been lucky to have some great moments but it would be a moment to treasure for a long time.
"You don't get the chance to score in cup finals too many times in your career. It would be right up there with my best memories.
"I think it's right to say that you've not seen the real Fernando Morientes since I arrived here in England. Saturday provides the stage for me to announce myself and I have got a real desire to take that chance.
"What better time than Saturday to go and do it? And then you will see the real Fernando Morientes.
"I'm the first to be disappointed with my form since I came to Liverpool, I am the first to accept that, but I have two or three years of top-flight football left in my career.
"I have been playing for 14 years and I've been aware that I haven't recently been hitting the level of performance I achieved when I was with Real Madrid and Monaco. But I feel I've still got a lot to offer and I'm going to produce that. I would like to finish my career here at Liverpool, and I would like the chance to show the real Morientes." |
