Gary Mac might be coming back
Former Scotland captain Gary McAllister hopes to return to football as a coach after leaving the game to care for his wife.
The former Leeds United midfielder quit as Coventry City player-manager at the end of 2003 and has not been involved with the professional game since.
His wife Denise lost her battle with the disease in March, and McAllister, speaking at a charity golf day in Newport, raising awareness of breast cancer, has admitted he would like to return to football.
"If I can help one lady against breast cancer, that's what we're trying to achieve, just to help one lady with an early diagnosis or a little bit longer survival," he told Sky Sports News.
"I've got a big job on my hands with the two young boys [his sons], but football is my love.
"I hope one day - what I'm going to try and do is do my coaching badges, get right up to a Uefa Pro-licence level then maybe look to get back in."
Meanwhile, the 41-year-old has expressed admiration for his former club Liverpool's manager Rafa Benitez.
Benitez is currently assessing the situation in Italy following the relegation of Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio, and McAllister believes the Spaniard is the best man for the job of securing any bargains that might be available
"With Rafa's connections across Europe, I can see him going in there and picking up some good acquisitions," McAllister added.
How long McAllister will take to return only he will know, but there are certainly a number of fans throughout football who would be glad to welcome him back to the fold. |
