REDS LEGENDS ROLL BACK THE YEARS
Legends from Liverpool's illustrious past rolled back the years as they entertained fans from Norway and Denmark on a three game summer tour.
Liverpool won all three of their tour games with Mark Walters top scorer with six goals.
The Liverpool legends who made the trip were Ian Rush (Norway only), John Barnes (Floro only), Alan Kennedy, Bruce Grobbelaar, Phil Neal, David Johnson, David Fairclough, John Durnin, Nicky Tanner, Bruce Grobbelaar, Bob Bolder, Michael Thomas, Mark Walters, Howard Gayle, Ronnie Whelan, Jimmy Case, Mike Marsh, Gary Gillespie, John Wark, Jan Molby, Roy Evans and John Aldridge (Denmark only).
The legends first point of call was Alesund in Norway when they beat a Norway all star team 3-1 with Walters scoring twice and Ian Rush also on the score-sheet. Included in the Norway team was former Nottingham Forest midfielder Lars Bohinen, former Swindon striker Jan Age Fjortoft and goalkeeper Tore Antonsen, the Norway goalkeeper in the classic 1981 match against England when the Norwegian TV commentator proclaimed, 'Your boys took a hell of a beating!'
The next port of call was Floro in Norway where Liverpool beat a Brann Bergen select team 5-1 with Walters hitting a hat-trick and John Durnin and an own goal sealed the win.
Anfield stadium announcer George Sephton also made the trip to Norway and gave a talk to the fans while Gerry and the Pacemakers and a Beatles tribute band 'Det Betales' provided the entertainment.
The players were also given the opporunity to take part in fly fishing and river rafting.
The Denmark trip
It was then off to Denmark for the party when goals from Durnin and Walters gave the Reds a 2-1 victory over a Danish national select team featuring Michael Laurdrup, Morten Olsen and John Faxe Jensen.
Peter Schulz from the Danish LFC fan club writes: "The Liverpool legends team boasting players like Alan Kennedy, Phil Neal and Bruce Grobbelaar visited Denmark for the first time and came away with a hard-fought but deserved 2-1 win. John Durnin and Mark Walters provided the goals in a highly competitive and entertaining game.
Liverpool went ahead very early on when Durnin raced onto a through ball and found the back of Danish goalkeeper (and big Red) Peter Kjaer's net. The forward had cheekily proclaimed to opponents at a sponsored golf event earlier in the day that he would score in the game.
The goal meant Liverpool could concentrate on defensive duties, but while the Scottish central defensive partnership of Gary Gillespie and John Wark performed brilliantly at the back the Reds still looked likely to build on the lead.
Durnin was again sent clear on the right and his square pass to an unmarked John Aldridge was turned in with ease by the former kop hero but the linesman had his flag up much to the dismay of Aldridge and the Liverpool bench led by former manager Roy Evans.
Liverpool made one change at half-time bringing on Bob Bolder in place of Grobbelaar.
Early in the second half Denmark looked determinedly for an equaliser and soon found it when right winger Klaus Berggreen finally managed to get past a solid Alan Kennedy. He put in a cross for Lars Olsen to glance past Bolder.
Liverpool responded by bringing on Jimmy Case in place of the injured Ronnie Whelan and Howard Gayle replaced David Fairclough.
Case quickly made his presence felt when he made a strong but fair challenge on Michael Laudrup. His partner in central midfield, Mike Marsh, was also involved in some great battles with former Arsenal man John Jensen.
With three minutes to go left full back Alan Kennedy, who had entertained Danish fans before the game by telling stories from his playing career, started a move which ended when Walters turned the ball in unmarked at the back post.
A minute later Gayle, himself a substitute, had to go off just like in the semi final against Bayern Munich in 1981. This time he was injured and Roy Evans was forced to bring himself on. Phil Neal was replaced by Michael Thomas.
The Reds hang on for a memorable win against strong opposition and the squad celebrated with a large proportion of the 4,367 Danish fans at a post match party. |
